ROST is currently working on behalf of the CRN nationally to collate experiences from around the country of studies engaging with 3rd party commercial date service providers (DSPs). There are a growing number of commercially funded DSPs that provide a service to researchers and their engaged delivery sites with a view to providing efficiencies in planning, management and delivery of research. This section lists some of those DSP examples which we have come across through the studies that have been accepted onto the NIHR Portfolio for our assessment for delivery in our region.
EMIS Recruit

uMed
Service description: The uMed platform helps life science clinical and medical teams recruit patients into studies and build evidence in days, not years.
The Cohort Search results go to the Study Sponsor - uMed finds a specific cohort using de-identified health record data from across our provider network. The sponsor can choose regions or sites
Research team at the health system review the research opportunity - uMed presents all study documentation including centralized ethics / IRB approvals so that the health system can be adopted as a study site
Patient Engagement is the first patient contact - The access request comes from the patient’s recognized medical provider. The patient is provided a weblink to follow. No app downloads are required
Data Collection - Data is collected directly from the patient and combined with the patient’s EHR data in a fully compliant manner to support the specific needs of each study

THIN
Service description: The Health Improvement Network® (THIN®) is one of the most respected and reliable data sources for anonymised primary care records, representing approximately 6% of the UK population as far back as 1994.

Our Future Health
Service description: The UK’s largest ever health research programme - Our Future Health is building a community of volunteers to create an incredibly detailed picture of the nation’s health.
How it works for researchers - The scale, depth and detail of Our Future Health will make it a world-leading resource for health research. The programme may hold the key to huge numbers of discoveries. These include:
identifying new signals to detect diseases much earlier than is possible now
developing new ways to predict with accuracy those at higher risk of disease
enabling better interventions by creating more effective tools, treatments and technologies
The intention is that the Our Future Health programme will provide two main types of resource for health research:
a prospective observational dataset for basic science, epidemiological, discovery and aetiological research, for example on the causes and early signs of disease
