South Bend International Airport is about 15 minutes by car from the Notre Dame campus (flights should be booked to South Bend, Indiana -- airport code SBN). Various transportation methods are available (e.g., taxi, rental car, ride share services).
The South Shore Line trains run directly from the Chicago Loop (at the corner of Michigan and Randolph) to South Bend International Airport (about a three-hour trip). From the airport, the Notre Dame campus is approximately a 15-minute ride by car. Various transportation methods are available (e.g., taxi, rental car, limo).
Visitors also can fly into Chicago then drive or take a bus to Notre Dame. The University is about two hours by car from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and about 90 minutes from Midway International Airport.
Transpo, the South Bend-based bus company, offers free service for students. Route #7 leaves from the Hesburgh Library circle drive and travels to University Park Mall and Downtown South Bend near Four Winds Field (minor league baseball stadium).
Transpo also operates The Sweep (Route #17) for service between Notre Dame, Holy Cross College, and Saint Mary's College.
The University of Notre dame operates three convenient shuttle routes within the Notre Dame campus:
Bulla to Main
Bulla to Library to Snite
Baseball to McKenna
The ND Mobile app and a website track the real-time location of the shuttle buses. The routes will run continuously from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Buses will arrive at each location approximately every ten minutes. The goal of the Notre Dame Shuttle is to transport the campus community as close as possible to the interior of campus and as quickly as possible.
Bike racks are located in dozens of locations around campus, including outside academic buildings and residence halls. Students are strongly encouraged to use U-bolt locks instead of traditional chain locks.
Notre Dame Police Department provides a bike registration service for personal bicycles. Registration is free and can be completed in person (with the bicycle) at Hammes Mowbray Hall, by flagging down an NDPD officer. Bicycles parked or stored in violation of regulations may be removed and impounded at the owner’s expense. Abandoned, unsecured, or unregistered bikes may be impounded at the owner’s expense.
A map of bike lanes in the City of South Bend is available online through the Office of Sustainability.
People who drive in the U.S. must have a valid driver's license. In Indiana, if you have a valid foreign driver’s license or international driver’s license, you can drive in the state of Indiana for one year from your original date of entry into the U.S. without restriction. Note: If your driver's license from your home country is not in English, you will need to obtain an International Driver's Permit (IDP).
Zipcar is the world’s leading car-sharing service. The option of renting a high-efficiency and low-cost Zipcar encourages students on campuses across the country to leave their cars at home during the school year. Zipcars are available 24/7 to all students, faculty, and staff members, ages 18 and older. Gas, 180 miles per day, insurance, reserved parking spots, and roadside assistance are included. Cars can be reserved anywhere from an hour to four days. ND students, faculty, and staff can join at zipcar.com/notredame.
