As an FLTA, one of your most valuable contributions to the entire campus is serving as a cultural ambassador. This means you are a representative of your home country/language/people and you bring unique and valuable perspectives and experiences to the university. This does not mean you have to speak on behalf of your entire nation/group, but rather just your own experiences and insights.
Every FLTA should plan to do a collaborative event each semester which highlights a deep part of your culture and worldviews. This is more impactful than simply sharing food, music, or clothing traditions. We want to inspire our students and community to shift their own perspectives to understand more deeply and meaningfully the world around them. The CSLC will always collaborate with you on these events to help you find space, on-campus partners, and an audience.
Examples of "deep culture" events:
FLTA + CSLC name pronunciation workshops (see an example of our Chinese name pronunciation workshop from 2023 here)
Feminism Around the World-- what feminism looks and feels like in your country
Developing or Developed? - sharing comparative thoughts and experiences coming from what the US considers a "developed" or "developing" country
Religious Diversity Abroad -- influences on experiences, culture, and life from your own perspectives
LGBTQ+ Communities at Home -- how does the LGBTQ experience in your home country compare to that of the midwestern US?
Education in Context -- how does the education system work in your country? What influences it most heavily? What differences/similarities have you noticed?
Sport Culture - US Football vs. Futbol
These are just examples; we want you to find a topic that interests you, that you're passionate about or that you have experience/desire to share!
