Gravity waves are key drivers of the atmosphere, however they are poorly constrained in models. My project aims to measure these waves in 3D using satellite data, and ray-trace them back to their source on a global scale. We have already demonstrated clear sources of these waves in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly small, mountainous islands in the southern ocean, as well as their propagation into the polar vortex.
Answering questions about the atmosphere is incredibly interesting - plus making figures of maps with my results is fun!
