The Master of Science in Creative Arts Therapy program at Nazareth University is rooted in a psychotherapeutic orientation, preparing students with backgrounds in art or music to become ethical and effective mental health professionals in the fields of Art Therapy or Music Therapy. Utilizing a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, the program is committed to developing professionals who integrate intellectual strength, ethical practice, and aesthetic values in their work with individuals, groups, and families. The New York State Department of Education has approved Nazareth’s Creative Arts Therapy department as a license-designated program.
The mission of the CAT department is to cultivate in students the knowledge and skills grounded in the core values, professional competencies, and ethical standards of Nazareth University, the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services, the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB), and New York State licensure guidelines. The program fosters personal and professional growth through rigorous academic coursework, diverse clinical experience, intensive supervision, research engagement, and a commitment to self-awareness, reflective practice, and interprofessional collaboration. The Creative Arts Therapy faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching, clinical practice, research, scholarship, and service.
History & Location
Nazareth University is an independent, co-educational institution governed by a lay Board of Directors. It was founded in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph as a liberal arts college for women. In 1941, the University moved to its current location in Pittsford, a residential suburb of Rochester, New York, easily accessible by car and public transportation. The 75-acre campus is renowned for its natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere.
