Registered Art Therapist/
Board Certification (ATR/ATR-BC)
The Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) is the national organization responsible for administering professional credentials for art therapists. The ATCB currently offers four credentials, each reflecting a different stage of professional development and specialization in the field.
The ATR-Provisional (ATR-P) credential is designed for individuals who have completed a qualifying graduate-level education in art therapy and are working under approved supervision toward full registration. This credential serves as the first formal step toward becoming a fully credentialed art therapist.
The Registered Art Therapist (ATR) credential confirms that an individual has completed graduate-level education in art therapy and obtained supervised post-graduate clinical experience.
Requirements to Become an ATR:
Completion of a qualifying master’s-level education, including:
Core coursework in art therapy
Supervised practicum and internship
Completion of post-education supervised clinical experience
Submission of professional references
The Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential is the highest level of national certification in art therapy. It demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in theory, clinical practice, and ethical standards through successful completion of a national board examination.
Board Certification Requirements:
Must hold an active ATR credential
Pass the ATCB Examination assessing advanced knowledge in art therapy theory, ethics, interventions, and clinical application
Maintain good standing with the ATCB and:
Renew the ATR credential annually
Complete 100 continuing education (CE) credits every five years to maintain board certification
Note: No additional coursework is required beyond the ATR to apply for the ATR-BC.
The Art Therapy Certified Supervisor (ATCS) credential is a specialized designation for ATR-BCs with substantial supervision experience. It recognizes advanced training and expertise in art therapy supervision.
ATCS Application Requirements:
Must be board-certified (ATR-BC) for at least three years
Provide documentation of at least 500 hours of supervision of ATR-P or ATR therapists (prior to 2024)
Submit:
A Professional Disclosure Statement as outlined in the ATCS standards
A Letter of Endorsement that meets ATCB criteria
All ATCB credential holders are required to adhere to the ATCB Code of Professional Practice.
It's important to note that certification and licensure are not the same. Certification (such as ATR-BC) is a national professional credential awarded by the ATCB. Licensure, such as the Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) in New York State, is granted at the state level and authorizes independent practice within that state.
