Evaluations are an essential part of the internship supervision process. Students require feedback in order to gain perspective in their performance both in their strengths and in their areas of need. An evaluation can support a student's understanding of themselves as a therapist as it provides a built-in opportunity for self-reflection. In the art therapy program, we use both Likert scale and narrative format evaluations in order to capture as much relevant information as possible. Students are asked to self-evaluate their progress and provide feedback to supervisors. This has been an excellent source of information for discussion of students' perception of themselves as a therapist and the challenges they may be facing. It is anticipated that students and supervisors will have the time to review the evaluation prior to the due date.
Students are required to provide supervisors with the documentation necessary to develop their evaluation at least two weeks prior to when evaluations are due. In general, the end of term and final evaluations are due the last week of class. Mid-term evaluations are due during the eighth week of class, the first semester of internship.
