Purpose: introduce Somerville Public Schools PE teachers to orienteering. Experience orienteering first, then discuss how to teach it to students.
Arrival and introductions: Pair participants and hand out Score-O maps. Briefly explain what orienteering is and how Navigation Games helps schools incorporate it into PE.
Score-O: Walk together to the starting point. Explain the map colors, orient the maps, and identify major features. In pairs, participants visit controls in any order using pin punches. They do not need to visit every control but must return within the given time limit.
When participants return, have them check their punch cards. Discuss what they enjoyed, what surprised them, and what they learned.
Mini Courses: Explain point-to-point orienteering and demonstrate how to use SPORTident: Clear, Start, complete the course, Finish, and Download. Each participant completes at least one course individually.
Participants use laminated pick-up maps to find cones and place them correctly within the Geometric-O layout.
Animal-O: Participants use clue sheets to visit the animals in order with electronic timing. When they finish, give them a Geometric-O map.
Geometric-O: Participants orient their maps using the colored corner cones and visit the controls in order. Demonstrate and discuss the progression from Animal-O to Geometric-O.
Share the Pilot Draft Plan and explain the four-lesson progression: Animal-O and map work; Geometric-O and Memory-O; Score-O and Poison Score-O; and orienteering courses.
Wrap-up: Discuss the physical, navigational, and teamwork skills students develop. Answer questions and explain where teachers can find more information.
