As a teacher you must be: a creator of inspiration, the shaper of futures, a storytelling master, a legendary negotiator, an expert multi-tasker, goal setting coach and a team and culture builder. Being a teacher isn`t just a job it`s a calling. While being out on teaching practice, I experienced what my mentor teacher was like and I discuss my experiences in the class and the things I noticed.
Reflection of the year
This year I did my teaching observation and teaching practice in the same Grade 3 class. In observation I quickly learnt how my mentor teacher liked operations to take place and I did things exactly as she would have. I also got to experience having learners with barriers to learning in my class for the first time, these barriers to learning were conditions like ADHD and Autism.
My mentor teacher entrusted me with giving the learners their medications on set times. I also got to see the difference in a learner that went on medication for the first time. Before the medication the learner almost never worked and had a very disruptive effect on the class and after the medication I hardly recognized this learner. She did her work and was no longer disruptive to the rest of the class.
I was often between my two Grade 3 classes and got to experience two very different learning environments. I became a part of the school and a part of the school community. This observation and teaching practice was absolutely amazing and if given the opportunity to return to this school I would do so in a heartbeat. I wish to find a school like this one, when I start teaching.
