Mathematics lesson (observation period)
This lesson is consolidating the number 9 for the learners as well developing number sense. I did that by doing bunny hopping sums with the learners, for example: I`m standing on 5, I jump twice, one what number am I standing now. I then do a paper plate activity with the learners where they have to do addition sums. I then explain worksheets to the learners and take the focus group on the mat.
Mathematics lessons and teaching video
This lesson starts with greeting the class and singing the "Good morning everyone" song. News is shared, weather charts updated, etc. Then mental math is done with the learners. Numbers are then shown to the learners and the learners must recognize the numbers, learners must also be able to read number names from 1-10. The next activity is counting objects. The learners then do worksheets in their independent groups.
The video starts with the teacher asking the learners how many bottle caps they think is in the zip-lock bag. The learners have to guess. The teacher the counts the bottle caps. The learners then have to add the 20 red bottle caps to the 10 blue bottle caps. The teacher then does a fruitloop counting activity with the learners. The learners have to put the fruitloops into blocks while counting them. The learners are then given a worksheet where they have to count in multiples of 2.
This lesson starts with mental math, counting in 2`s and 5`s. The learners are asked multiple questions, that are much harder and requires of them to think. Consolidation of prior knowledge about 3D-shapes take place. In Grade 1 the learners still speak about ball and box shapes. The learners will then do some data handling, learners will get pictures of 3D shapes and then the concept of will be explained to them. All the learners with cubes will come and stand in front of the class and receive a smiley magnet, the learners then have to place the smiley in the correct column. as conclusion, learners have to name certain objects based on how they move, roll, slide, etc. There is 4 groups, three of these groups will work independently on worksheet, designed specifically for their ability group. The teacher will work on the mat with the focus group.
