To graduate with a High School Diploma in the State of Florida, students must meet the following requirements related to Social Studies:
1 credit in World History (10th Grade / 2nd Year)
1 credit in US History (11th Grade / 3rd Year)
0.5 credit in US Government (12th Grade / 4th Year, either semester)
0.5 credit in Economics (12th Grade / 4th Year, either semester)
Lake Brantley High School offers Standard, Honors, and AP levels of each of the required Social Studies courses.
In addition to the three levels of each required course, we offer Advanced Placement college-level alternatives to some of these graduation requirements and enrichment electives.
These courses are Social Studies enrichment electives for students interested in exploring the complex histories and rich cultures of these two populations.
African-American History examines the political, economic, social, religious, miliary, and cultural events that created the modern African American identity and community.
Latin-American History explores the histories of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Basin, including the rich cultures thriving during the Pre-Columbian period, the radical changes caused by First Contact with Europe, and the history that has unfolded since decolonization.
Each of these courses contributes 1 credit to the Electives category of the High School Graduation Requirements.
This course is recommended for 10th, 11th, or 12th grade students who have demonstrated strength and an interest in the Social Sciences and who have demonstrated proficiency on the Grade 9 or Grade 10 F.A.S.T. ELA PM3.
This course is an excellent introduction to college-level coursework and a great opportunity to earn college credit during high school.
Because passing scores on the AP exam will earn students college credit at participating colleges and universities and this is intended to prepare students for further AP coursework, students should expect regular homework involving reading and writing at the pre-collegiate and collegiate level.
A passing score on the AP Psychology exam will earn students Social Science or General Education elective credits at most participating colleges and universities.

These courses are a single semester in length and are worth 0.5 credit. AP Microeconomics will fulfill the 0.5 Economics credit, but AP Comparative Government and Politics does not fulfill the 0.5 Government credit.
These courses are intended for 12th Grade students who are ready for the rigors of collegiate coursework and seek to earn college credit while in high school.
Because passing scores on the AP exam will earn students college credit at participating colleges and universities and this is intended to prepare students for further AP coursework, students should expect regular homework involving reading and writing at the pre-collegiate and collegiate level.

Although there is no required 9th Grade Social Studies course, motivated students who intend to pursue other AP course opportunities and who were successful in Grade 8 US History as well as their Grade 8 F.A.S.T. ELA PM3 are strongly encouraged to take AP Human Geography. Through research-based content area reading strategies, students use the World History curriculum to make progress toward proficiency ahead of the Grade 10 F.A.S.T. PM3, which is a High School Graduation Requirement.
World History Honors is intended for 10th Grade students who did demonstrate proficiency on the Grade 9 F.A.S.T. PM3, but are not yet ready for the rigor of college-level Advanced Placement (AP) coursework in AP World History or AP European History.
These courses fulfill High School Graduation Requirement for World History.

In contrast to AP World History, AP European History restricts its study to just a single continent, its inner cultures and conflicts, and complicated relationships with the rest of the world. This course is ideal for students with a passion for studying history, culture, the humanities, religion, or the social sciences.
