To graduate with a High School Diploma in the State of Florida, students must meet the following requirements related to English Language Arts:
4 credits in English (1-4 or Equivalent Accelerated Courses)
Demonstrated Proficiency on the Grade 10 F.A.S.T. ELA (or qualified concordant score)
The State of Florida requires students who have not yet demonstrated English reading proficiency to take specific courses:
All students who fail to demonstrate proficiency on the F.A.S.T. ELA Progress Monitoring 3 (PM3) assessment in the Spring by earning a Level 3 or higher or do not take the assessment in the Spring are required to receive a reading intervention the following year.
Level 1 students are required to be enrolled into a Direct Instruction Intensive Reading Class
Level 2 students are required to receive an intervention, either through Direct Instruction Intensive Reading or a core academic course that utilizes research-based reading intervention strategies.
All students who qualify for ESOL services are required to take classes with specific supports and services targeting their specific needs.
In Seminole County Public Schools, such students are served through self-contained English and Intensive Reading classes until they are able to demonstrate proficiency in English.
Review the ESOL page for more information.
These courses are required for students who earned a Level 1 on the F.A.S.T. ELA Progress Monitoring 3 (PM3) and are recommended for students who earned a low Level 2 or did not take the assessment at all. They are taken in addition to English and fulfill Elective High School Graduation Requirements.
All 9th and 10th Grade students at Lake Brantley High School take Pre-AP English 1 & 2 Honors. There are no other English classes offered. The purpose of this is to ensure ALL students have access to a rigorous English curriculum that sets them on a path with many opportunities for enrichment and advancement, including AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Seminar, and other accelerated options.
This sequence of courses prepares students for both F.A.S.T. ELA and advanced coursework in English and other core subjects. All 9th and 10th graders are automatically enrolled in this level of coursework, and no alternative is offered.
These courses prepare students for the opportunity to earn the AP Capstone Diploma, but do not fulfill the requirements.
After Pre-AP English 2 Honors, students have options regarding the level of rigor they wish to pursue within English Language Arts to fulfill their 2 remaining credits. Students demonstrating high levels of proficiency in Pre-AP English 2 Honors or English 3 Honors will be pre-registered for the AP course at the next level. Students seeking acceleration and college-preparation are encouraged to co-enroll into both the AP English course and the AP Capstone course for their level. Successful completion of AP Seminar and AP Research along with 4 other AP courses will earn a student the AP Capstone Diploma.
Note: 3rd and 4th Year students who have not yet met their Reading Assessment (Grade 10 FAST PM3 or Concordant) Graduation Requirement will take a special Standard-level English course. Standard-level English is not available to students who have met their Reading Assessment Graduation Requirement.
These levels of English are recommended for students who have demonstrated proficiency on the Grade 10 F.A.S.T. PM3, but are not intending to enroll directly into a 4-year college or university following graduation.
These courses follow a traditional English curriculum that balances professional and creative writing, classical literature, and non-fiction/technical literacy.
These levels of English are recommended for students who have demonstrated strength on the Grade 10 F.A.S.T. PM3 and are intending to enroll directly into a 4-year college or university following graduation.
Because passing scores on the AP exams will earn students college credit at participating colleges and universities, these courses are taught at a pre-collegiate level of rigor.
Students should expect regular homework involving reading and writing at the pre-collegiate level in preparation for the AP exams in the Spring, as well as future collegiate work.
Note: Rising Seniors who took English 3 Honors their Junior Year may be pre-registered for AP English Language. If they have a greater interest in reading, they may opt to take AP English Literature instead.
Each of these courses fulfill the High School Graduation Requirements for English III or English IV.
These courses contribute to the requirements for the AP Capstone Diploma.
