Hybrid Animals
This project involves using either Adobe Photoshop or PhotoPea online.
The goal of the project is to create an imaginary animal by combining two existing animal photos to create an unbelievable creation, only possible through the magic of digital photo manipulation.
Key tools we will focus on using during this project:
Selection tools (preferably the lasso tool)
Eyedropper (used to match colours)
Clone tool (used to duplicate pieces of a photo)
Blur & Smudge tools (used to soften edges)
Colour & Hue adjustments (used to match both sections of the animal match)
tips for getting started
Create a new page in your Design Portfolio, label it "Hybrid Animal"
Sketch your design idea out on paper first or using the pen or brush tools in PhotoPea
Ensure you are selecting high quality animal images (select the "large" option from the image size dropdown in Google image search)
If you download an image and it has a .WEBP file extension, you can convert it to a .PNG using a tool like this: Cloud Convert
Criterion A / B: Inquiring and Analyzing & Developing Ideas
Identify a Design Problem: Begin by selecting a design problem, which is creating a hybrid animal. Understand the project's purpose and objectives, including the use of Photopea tools.
Research and Analysis: Research various animals to select the two base animal images for your hybrid creature. Consider their physical characteristics, habitats, and behaviors. Analyze their unique features and qualities.
Define Design Specifications: Determine the characteristics and attributes your hybrid animal should have. This includes considering the blend of features from both base animals, size, color, and any other unique traits.
Storyboard or Sketch: Create rough sketches or storyboards to visualize your hybrid animal design. This helps in developing a clear vision of the final result.
Selection of Animal Photos: Gather high-quality images of the two base animals you wish to combine. Ensure that the images are clear, well-lit, and compatible in terms of perspective and size.
Use of Selection Tools: In Photopea, use selection tools to precisely isolate the parts of each animal that you want to combine. Pay attention to details like fur, scales, feathers, or any unique textures.
Combining Features: Start merging the selected features from both animals using blending and blurring brushes. Ensure that the blending process is seamless, making the hybrid creature appear as if it naturally exists.
Criterion A: Evaluation
Excellent (7-8): Clearly defined design problem, comprehensive research and analysis, well-structured design specifications, and detailed storyboarding or sketches.
Proficient (5-6): Clearly defined design problem, thorough research and analysis, well-structured design specifications, and adequate storyboarding or sketches.
Basic (3-4): Some definition of design problem, basic research and analysis, limited design specifications, and minimal storyboarding or sketches.
Limited (1-2): Vague design problem, minimal research and analysis, unclear design specifications, and inadequate storyboarding or sketches.
Insufficient (0-1): Lack of a defined design problem, minimal research, missing design specifications, and no storyboarding or sketches.
Criterion B: Evaluation
Excellent (7-8): High-quality selection of animal photos, precise use of selection tools, seamless blending of features, and clear organization of layers.
Proficient (5-6): Good selection of animal photos, precise use of selection tools, effective blending of features, and organized use of layers.
Basic (3-4): Adequate selection of animal photos, fair use of selection tools, fair blending of features, and somewhat organized layers.
Limited (1-2): Limited selection of animal photos, imprecise use of selection tools, noticeable issues with blending features, and disorganized layers.
Insufficient (0-1): Poor selection of animal photos, inaccurate use of selection tools, clear issues with blending features, and chaotic layer organization.
Criterion C: Creating the Solution
Layer Organization: Utilize layers in Photopea to separate and organize your work. Each element, like the body, head, limbs, and any additional details, should be on separate layers for easy modification and refinement.
Clone Stamps and Brushwork: Use clone stamps to adjust textures and details to ensure the hybrid creature's features blend cohesively. Employ brushes to paint and refine areas to create a more realistic appearance.
Color and Hue Adjustments: Adjust the color and hue of your hybrid animal to achieve a harmonious and balanced appearance. Ensure that it looks like a single, unified creature, rather than a patchwork of colors.
Create a Final Composition: Combine all elements into a single, cohesive composition. Make sure the background complements your hybrid animal design.
Criterion C: Evaluation
Excellent (7-8): Highly organized layers, seamless clone stamps and brushwork, harmonious color and hue adjustments, and a well-integrated final composition.
Proficient (5-6): Organized layers, effective clone stamps and brushwork, balanced color and hue adjustments, and a mostly integrated final composition.
Basic (3-4): Some layer organization, adequate clone stamps and brushwork, fair color and hue adjustments, and a partially integrated final composition.
Limited (1-2): Limited layer organization, imprecise clone stamps and brushwork, noticeable issues with color and hue adjustments, and a less integrated final composition.
Insufficient (0-1): Poor layer organization, ineffective clone stamps and brushwork, incoherent color and hue adjustments, and a disjointed final composition.
Criterion D: Evaluating
Self-Evaluation: Reflect on your design process and the final product. Analyze how well you met the design specifications and if the design problem was effectively addressed.
Peer Feedback: Share your work with peers and gather constructive feedback. Consider their insights on the visual appeal, realism, and creativity of your hybrid animal.
Iterative Improvements: Make revisions based on the feedback received and your own reflection. This may involve further refinement of blending, color adjustments, or other aspects.
Documentation: Compile all relevant documentation, including your design specifications, sketches, and a written report describing the design process and the reasons behind your design choices.
Criterion D: Evaluation
Excellent (7-8): Comprehensive self-evaluation, thorough peer feedback, iterative improvements based on feedback, and well-documented design process.
Proficient (5-6): Effective self-evaluation, constructive peer feedback, some iterative improvements, and adequate documentation.
Basic (3-4): Basic self-evaluation, limited peer feedback, minimal iterative improvements, and some documentation.
Limited (1-2): Limited self-evaluation, minimal peer feedback, minimal iterative improvements, and poor documentation.
Insufficient (0-1): Lack of self-evaluation, no peer feedback, no iterative improvements, and missing documentation.
By following these steps and addressing the criteria A, B, C, and D, you will create an imaginative and well-documented hybrid animal design that demonstrates your skills in design, photo manipulation, and critical thinking.
