Esports are open to anybody at GNS. We pledge to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. Our Esports Code of Conduct is a key part of this pledge. It is focused on four fundamental values as outlined to the left.
As a spectator sport and as an industry, competitive gaming has become a billion-dollar business and is projected to continue to grow exponentially. The prevalence of esports in schools and at post-secondary is also rapidly expanding.
At GNS, 74% of our MYP students (grades 6-10) play video games in their free time. 59% of those students (146 total) expressed an interest in joining an esports club at the school.
Studies have definitely shown that students who are involved in extracurricular activities are more successful in a number of critical ways. While GNS has significant extracurricular offerings for more traditional sporting areas, we realize these do not appeal to all students.
Esports has grown exponentially over the past decade and esports tournaments now regularly attract more global viewers than traditional sports including the NFL and NBA.
By offering esports at GNS we are offering an additional opportunity for all students to find a pathway to engage with their school community.
When students can join a school esports team, their interest in gaming becomes a social experience as opposed to a solo-experience they have away from school. The feelings of acceptance gained through joining school activities can support and benefit a students’ physical as well as mental health and wellbeing. The sense of inclusion gained through participation in school activities can have far-reaching benefits that extend to the classroom and beyond.
eSports are team based and promote the same valuable skills learned in traditional team sports such as collaboration, social skills, strategic thinking and planning, time management, and managing success and failures.
Esports at GNS connects to our school core values around individuality and community and will provide additional opportunities for students to pursue their passions and follow their interests in a supportive and collaborative way.
In 2021, global esports income hit $1 billion, and by 2024, it is predicted to reach $1.6 billion
By 2024, 577.2 million people are predicted to follow esports around the world, up from 397.8 million in 2019.
