Redefining the New Media Divide
Since 2008, Jesse Miller has worked in media education programs helping curate curriculum and learning resources with school districts across North America. Currently, Jesse is a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria and a Trainer for Safer Schools Together.
Our GNS senior school students in Grades 9-12 will be working with Jesse Miller through workshops to support awareness around the impacts of social media platforms, online safety and digital citizenship. In addition to these workshops, we'd like to provide parents, caregivers, and members of our GNS the community the chance to also benefit from Jesse's expertise in these areas.
In light of the technology experiences & reliances during the 2020 pandemic, our tech safety focus in 2023 revolves around how children navigate screen-time, online behaviours, and gaming, making it a central concern for parents and caregivers.
As we strive to support families in this evolving landscape, our goal is to refine the student culture of communication across personal, professional, and entertainment-oriented online spaces.
During this session, we will delve into several key themes, including media literacy, the delicate balance of screen time, addressing negative online interactions and experiences, and harnessing the positive potential of social media and associated internet tools.
This evening discussion will encompass a range of pertinent topics:
Promoting responsible and ethical use of social media platforms.
Striking a balance in technology usage for educational, communicative, and recreational purposes.
Exploring the positive aspects of gaming and participation in online communities.
Understanding the concept of digital consent in the context of sharing content online.
Examining the role of schools and public entities in regulating internet behaviors and actions.
Identifying reporting mechanisms and tools for addressing unsafe online behaviors.
Furthermore, our conversation will prominently feature the theme of digital consent. We will explore how to cultivate personal and community-level understandings of digital consent and its impact on relationships. The discussion will revolve around fostering trust in content sharing and respecting information in both static and remote environments. Messaging will underscore the importance of seeking permission and understanding how consent can empower a culture of positive interactions on social media platforms.
