Silence of Science
Leah
This piece is a sheet stapled to a frame and painted with the image of a person. Inside of the person we see humanity's impact on Earth. There are major factories, planes, cars and nuclear bombs. All of these are pieces contributing to our negative impact on earth. The background is earth untouched, rolling hills, trees and birds.
When we kicked off our expedition, You Be The Judge: Justice Through Art, I automatically wanted to draw attention to the silencing of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientists. I did some research and found articles that proved that the now reformed EPA had forbidden climate change scientists from releasing and presenting their findings. If we continue our harmful ways, our planet will be destroyed, leaving nothing for future generations. Massive amounts of CO2 being released into the air destroy our atmosphere, poison our water, and change the climate of ecosystems thus wiping out entire species. I want to bring attention to this. I want to inform people of the impact we are making and help heal this planet. Silencing the scientists will not hide the truth; no one can bury the truth. It is like the sun, you might not always see it, but you know that it is always there.
Almost everyday I hear about some species going extinct or some country going under a state of emergency because of an incredibly dangerous storm. Every year Earth’s condition deteriorates, harder and stronger storms form, longer droughts, flood, fires, mass spread human disease and an increasingly toxic atmosphere. The carbon parts per million (PPM) has risen over a hundred in the past century. This is far more of an increase than our planet has ever had. How can you deny it? Proof is everywhere.
