I made my project out of a box, it has a Puerto Rican flag on the top. The flag consists of horizontal red stripes, white stripes, and a blue triangle with the white start in the middle. On the outside of the box there are pictures showing the destruction from Hurricane Maria. Inside the box there are more pictures of how Puerto Ricans want their future to look bright and hopeful.

I think corruption and lack of government help to repair the country after Hurricane Maria is an injustice. I have a very personal connection because my family that is living in Puerto Rico is affected by this. They are trying to bring hope to each other, so they can rebuild and get back what they had before this hurricane happened. My family is currently trying to figure out how they can remain safe because there have been floods and other storms following Hurricane Maria. I have little cousins, five and six years old. They are living without electricity, and at night they get really scared. Whitefish was the company that was supposed to be providing electrical services back to the island of Puerto RicoSince Whitefish is not doing their job they are hurting many people including young kids. My cousins, Jason and Jeremy are fifteen and twelve. They moved here to the United States because of how bad it was in Puerto Rico. In the US kids enjoy everything they have here. But kids in the US really don’t know how hard my cousins have it. They are struggling to get food to fill them up for the day. People here in my community complain about something like no WiFi, or their game isn’t working. This verses my own family members who are worrying how the next day is going to be. They have to worry about how they are going to eat a good meal and feed the whole family, or when power will be back.

Puerto Ricans dislike that Donald Trump says that people from Puerto Rico need to help each other and put in effort. However, they are helping each other. They are finding food and water that’s clean and shuttling it over the river. “The US government is not trying to help us with anything, so we Puerto Ricans are looking out for each other. Also, we are trying to help each other as much we can,” said Carmen Yulin Cruz, Mayor of San Juan.

Puerto Ricans say FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is nowhere to be found. They heard on the news that FEMA is in Puerto Rico and helping out, but the residents have not seen anything. I know that the future of Puerto Rico is bright, and that the people will have their island looking beautiful again because they are making progress even though there have been set-backs.
