Power is Needed for Survival
David
My piece is a 3D representation of our globe. It symbolizes the water crisis that the people of Puerto Rico have faced since Hurricane Maria hit on September 20th, 2017. There is what appears to be tainted, muddy water to resemble Puerto Rico's water source since this tragic disaster.
The human right I chose to investigate further was that everyone should have access to basic necessities, including clean water, food and shelter. I chose this subject because this means a lot to me in many ways. I do not think that the people of Puerto Rico should have to worry about this as it is inhumane, dangerous and fatal. I chose this subject because I want people to realize how lucky we are compared to the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico who are struggling to have clean drinking water and power today. People are still dying today due to the unsafe drinking water. The death toll is uncertain because the government it still trying to sort out the actual number.
My goal was to create a piece of art that makes the viewer realize how lucky they are that they don’t have to worry about waking up without clean water. The globe is black to represent the extended absence of electricity. I made Puerto Rico extra large to represent that it is a big part of the U.S. too, even though it is a very small island. The people of the U.S. need to stand by all citizens, especially those who are in need of help like the people of Puerto Rico.
