Hate Crimes
Hailie
My piece was created with acrylic paint on poster board. I found images to show current hate crime against Muslims in the United States. The image of the red X in the middle of the prints is meant to symbolize no hate crimes against Muslims around the world.
I chose this subject because of the number of hate crime there are in the U.S. After analyzing The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I was passionate about discrimination. I chose to focus on discrimination against Muslims. This is important to me because it is very sad that many innocent Muslims are victims of hate crimes. Many people tend to judge Muslims. Some Muslims may be terrorist, but the majority are not.
I was inspired to create this piece because of information I found in my research about the topic. Discrimination is on the rise based on the research conducted. One in five Muslims say that they have been called bad names and see anti-Muslim graffiti. Six percent say that they have been physically attacked. Many Muslims polled said they felt scared, and they were nervous of President Trump. They also don’t feel like Americans see them as a part of US society. However, 89% say they are proud to be American and Muslim.
When people look at my artwork, I hope they the understand this perspective on this issue of discrimination.
