Little Time Left
Kayden
My piece depicts the wall prototypes that President Trump and the government are planning on using to keep out illegal immigrants. There are pictures and headlines that have to do with DACA and the people affected by it all around the walls. This piece is a collage of prints on poster.
I chose this right, not because it affects my family or friends directly, but because I am concerned for the people who are currently protected by DACA. They would lose their job, their home, family, and friends just because they were brought here illegally as children. They may not have had anything to do with crossing the border. If the president takes away DACA, he will ruin thousands of lives because of something many of these immigrants had no say in. It was their parents’ choice not theirs.
I wanted to create a piece of art on something I knew quite a lot about because I want to be able to go into detail on real facts about the problem. Also out of all the problems happening , I felt this was the most wrong. I feel this way about this because they had nothing to do with them being illegal immigrants, their parents brought them illegally over the border, they didn’t have the choice to go or not. Plus if they got deported there would be a lot of bad things that happened to them. They would be stripped from their homes, jobs, friends, family. Many of them don’t even speak the language of the country they would be deported to. Not to mention it would hurt small businesses because the ones that have hired DACA recipients would have to worry about hiring replacements which is not easy for small businesses. According to Business Insider a study showed that roughly 700,000 workers could lose their jobs over the next two years if DACA was not replaced with something permanent. The report says that the loss of their labor might cost the country around $460.3 billion over the next decade. Also, according to a report from the Center for American Progress, over the past five years, 91% of DACA recipients are currently working for companies across the US.
I hope my art shows viewers that there is still time to save the people who are protected by DACA, but because an agreement must be made by March, there's not much time left for them. I hope they see that it’s beneficial in many ways to have the people protected by DACA be able to stay in our country.
