Green practice is an important activity nowadays. One of the green practices in schools is to make enzymes from kitchen waste. The skin of fruits, excess vegetables and ingredients used for cooking or eating, can be converted into enzymes that have various domestic, agricultural and many other uses. Waste enzymes are complex solutions produced through the fermentation process of fruits and vegetables, sugar and water. The structure is dark brown and smells sweet and sour.
In fact, these waste enzymes can also overcome the problem of global warming. During the onset of enzyme production, this catalytic process will release Ozone gas. Ozone is able to reduce carbon dioxide and heavy metals in the atmosphere which traps heat in the clouds. Thus heat can be released from the earth as well as reduce the effects of greenhouses and global warming. In addition, waste enzymes will convert ammonia to nitrate to supply essential nutrients to plants and convert carbon dioxide to carbonate which has many benefits for plants and marine life.
The use of waste enzymes in rivers contaminated with oil or chemicals has been found to help unravel the complex bonds of chemicals in polluted rivers. Indirectly, it can purify the river water naturally and improve the quality of the river water. The participation of students and teachers in producing waste enzymes (fruits) can help conserve the environment and air. One of the green practice cultures practiced by SMK Convent Pulau Tikus is the production of citrus fruit waste enzymes.
To cultivate green practices in the school
To provide an outdoor learning station
To educate students on how to produce fruit enzyme from the skin of mandarin oranges that will be collected during Chinese New Year and also as an effort in waste reduction.
To use enzyme for composting waste and creating natural fertilizer
Enzyme can replace the cleaning chemicals we normally use. It can be mixed with water to water the plants. It is economical, useful and at the same time beneficial to our health because it uses natural fertilizers that are not mixed with chemicals. Diluted waste enzymes can be used to remove odors and dirt such as washing the floor, cleaning grease, air conditioning, toilets, fans and other household appliances. In addition, Enzyme can also be used to wash vegetables and fruits as they are able to remove herbicides, pesticides, pesticides, chemicals, heavy metals and bacteria that settle on the surface of vegetables or fruits.
Through this project, we can apply green practices to all community of Convent Pulau Tikus because the enzyme have various uses. In line with the government's recommendation to encourage 3R campaigns which are reduce, reuse and recycle, we reduce the kitchen waste and reuse it as natural fertilizers to our plants. Through this project as well, environmental pollution can be reduced.
After about 6 months, the enzyme is used as an organic fertilizer for the plants in school.
Enzymes are critical components to support plant growth because most of the organic material in soils are too big and insoluble for plants to take up. Therefore, by producing enzymes with kitchen waste not only reduces waste but also preserves the environment.
