SMK Convent Pulau Tikus, a secondary School located at the town of Georgetown, Penang. Our school was established since 1922. Our school compound is only 2.5 hectares. As in year 2021, we only have 17 teachers, 3 school staff and 99 students ranging from 16 to 17 years old. It's the smallest secondary school in Penang. Why? Becoz we will be closing by the end of next year, 2022. By then the school will be exactly 100 years old. We must end the school in glory and leave a legacy for others to learn from.
Our Eco-Schools vision is SMK Convent Pulau Tikus Sustainable, Clean and Green. Our objective is to ensure environmental programs are carried out effectively and continuously to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and conserving the environment.
We started to take part actively in the environmental care projects organised by the local council and some others Non-Government Organization such as Malaysian nature Society since 2017. In these three years’ time, we had won several awards such as Penang Green School Awards, Champion in Recycling Competitions, Water Vision Competition, Break-up with plastics competitions, Energy Efficiency Challenge and many more. We have been exposed to this Eco-Schools Programme since 2019. After some year’s effort, it’s time for us to move up to the international platform to create awareness and to build up self esteem of the students in the school. In February 2021, we successfully obtained Green Flag Award.
How do we implement Green Flag criteria?
1.To take part in Eco-Schools Programme we need long term commitment. We must mentally and physically prepared to face all the challenges that will crop up, always thinking positively might help in this journey.
2.After we identify our target whether you are aiming for bronze, silver or green flag award, we can check on the criteria needed and source for the help. Getting teachers on board by assigning them certain tasks that are suitable for them or their skills. Collaborations with other schools can lighten our burden too.
3.Sometimes we will need financial support along the way such as buying soil, gardening pots, gardening tools, paint and painting tools, plants or seedlings. Turning trash into cash is the best solution as you are able to manage your waste and have a waste management project too.
4.Before we submit the report online, make sure we reach all the criteria needed. Planning is the key to success in all the programmes. Without proper planning, things will mess up and we might fail to achieve it.
5. Training students to take responsibility, to lead, to perform tasks, to deliver speeches and to maintain the cleanliness of the school and to love the school environment is a must.
6..Lastly, the commitment from all the parties involved is crucially important. This programme is not a one man show, it needs the commitment and cooperation from everyone. From the principal to the gardeners and cleaners. But we as the coordinator in this programme play a vital role in order to achieve our target.

The eco-policy in SMK CPT are learning to love mother earth and its environment. Educate students to keep the school compound clean and green and not to be a litter bug. Inculcate good morale value such as respecting each other, respecting the nature. We also encourage the whole school community to practice 3R in their daily lives. In order to reduce waste, we encourage the school community to bring their own container and cutlery daily. We also practice the habit of saving paper, water and electricity in the school. The eco-policy was implemented since 2017 and it has allowed the majority of students to practice it in their daily lives.
