Aquaponics is a combination of Aquaculture (freshwater fish farming) and Hydroponics (water-based farming methods). Aquaculture and Hydroponics have their own problems and by using aquaponic methods, both of these problems can be solved simultaneously and more productively in the production of agricultural.
Under natural conditions, the excretory waste of aquatic life raised in the aquarium will cause water to be toxic to the aquatic life, but this toxic content will instead turn into a nutrient for plants grown hydroponically. Aquaponics system will channel water from the toxic aquatic life aquarium to the plant. After that, the plant will naturally supply clean and non-toxic water for the aquatic life. Freshwater aquatic life is very suitable to be applied to this aquaponics system because most plants need fresh water to survive. Water should only be added when only lack of water caused by absorption by plants, natural evaporation by air and also when fish aquarium are cleaned.
The most important equipment in aquaponics system applications is water pumps Without a water pump, this system will not be able to fully function because the water pump like the 'heart' to this system. The water pump will carry the toxic water of the aquatic life to the plant to be absorbed as a source of nutrients for plant growth.
