Officially established as an educational institution in 1978, the Aullwood properties provide a variety of different learning experiences to allow visitors of all ages to learn about plants, animals, and ecological concepts. This unique institution is comprised of three distinct areas: the Education Center, which contains exhibits and specimens that adhere to themes of environmental protection, bird-friendly habitats, and preservation of rare and endangered species; the Aullwood Farm, a working farm that demonstrates sustainable agricultural practices; and the Aullwood Sanctuary, a 200-acre preserve that showcases the biodiversity of prairie, woodland, wetland, and pond habitats.

In-Person Programming

  1. "Comparing Communities" Guided Tour --> Students explore prairie, stream, pond, forest, and meadow habitats to observe and investigate ecosystems (grades 3 - 12).

  2. "Farmyard Adventures" Guided Tour --> Explore the Aullwood farm to learn about the significance of farms in the production of food and clothing (grades PreK - 3).

    • "From Our Farm to You" Classroom Visit --> A similar program conducted by an Aullwood Environmental Educator at your school (grades PreK - 3).

  3. "Maple Syrup" Guided Tour --> Learn about differences between historical methods of refining sap into syrup and modern commercial production (grades K - 12).

    • NOTE: This program is only offered FEB - MAR.

  4. "Nature Explorations" Guided Tour --> Younger students use sensory learning and inquiry to experience Aullwood's habitats and exhibits (grades PreK - 2nd).

  5. "Web of Life" Classroom Visit --> Older students analyze positive and negative human influences on ecosystems, including extinction and the effects of herbicides and pesticides on habitats, by focusing on birds of prey (grades 4 - 7).

Virtual Programming/Distance Learning

  1. "Web of Life" Classroom Visit may be adjusted for a virtual format if desired.

Environmental Literacy Standards

At Aullwood Audubon, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the environment and the circumstances and conditions affecting it, particularly as it relates to air, climate, land, food, energy, water, and ecosystems.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of society’s impact on the natural world.
