Risk Taking and Decision Making

Decisions, decisions, decisions.  Part of being human is making a choice, good or bad, and having the opportunity to reflect on that choice after the fact.  Everyday, teenagers make poor decisions because of peer pressure and a lack of decision making skills that could have helped them avoid a bad situation.  This unit will teach you some steps to follow when making a decision, and how to put the pieces back together if a poor decision is made.  We will practice decision making skills through a series of scenarios that challenge your values, and ask you to examine a situation from all different angles.  You are sure to slip up, but we will guide you to the right place, and help you master the art of decision making!  Your newly acquired skills will become your best friend as we explore other health concepts that require strong decision making skills!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Gary 18, and Tom 19, are driving around on a Friday night looking for something to do. They

stop at Gary’s to grab a few beers, and they head across town to meet up with some friends.

Tom, who is in the passenger seat, decides to crack open a beer, and he throws the rest of the

beers in the back seat. Gary accidentally drives through a red light, and the next thing he

notices is the blue lights from a police cruiser pull up behind him. What should he do?

Come to class to find out!
