Human Sexuality

High School brings with it many challenges that make it one of the most fun, but definitely one of the most difficult periods of time in a teenagers life.  Pressure to fit in, combined with the demands from teachers and the deluge of social media that has teenagers struggling to keep up, can really wreak havoc on a persons mind.  Throw in an increase of hormones and many teens can make mistakes without the right skills and information.  The Human Sexuality unit is designed to help teenagers understand their bodies, and more importantly, how to protect it.  Our program is abstinence based, supporting the notion that the only 100% way to avoid the risk of becoming pregnant or contracting a sexually transmitted infection is to not engage in sexually active behavior.

Because the media portrays sex as the norm among youngsters, teens are faced with conflicting messages about the reality of being in a sexually active relationship.  The idea that "everyone else is doing it" leads to feelings of insecurity and dangerous decisions.  Through open dialogue and discussion about sex, students learn the risks and realities associated with sexaul activity.  While we stress the concept of abstinence, we also learn about the different types of contraception to teach students how to be safe and responsible in the event they are in a sexually active relationship.  We wrap the unit up by completing a fill in chart labeling the most common sexually transmitted infections, how they are contracted, what symptoms they present, how they go away, and how to protect yourself from them.
