Protection from abuse, violence and exploitation is described in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPD Act) and it ensures if any person or registered organisation who or which has reason to believe that an act of abuse, violence or exploitation has been, or is being, or is likely to be committed against any person with disability, may take cognizance of incidents of abuse, violence and exploitation and provide legal remedies available against such incidents. They may also take steps for avoiding such incidents and prescribe the procedure for its reporting, to rescue, protect and rehabilitate victims of such incidents; and create awareness and make available information among the public.
Everyone involved in both preventative safeguarding work and when responding to allegations or incidents of abuse apply four key principles:
i. Protection through legal remedies,
ii. Prevention through reporting
iii. Promise for empowerment
iv. Partnership to create awareness.
