Lesson 1

Mail Art!

Mail art can be a number of things! This could be adding art onto pre-made packaging or creating your own postcards/envelopes. For this lesson the students made their own post cards and wrote letters on the back to whomever they wished! The students worked with multiple mediums practicing their usage of watercolors and colored pencils

Lesson 1, day 1 was focused on introducing the students to mail art and how it can be used. We had group discussions about memory and important memories that we might want to share with others and visually bring to life. The students were very enthusiastic when talking about their memories and were eager to get started. The students learned about figurative art and even a little bit of art history! We talked about some paintings that correlate with memory and then they got to work!

Lesson 1, day 2 was a low attendance day so the students were able to continue working on their postcards as well as start new projects. The students were able to work on large pieces of paper and listen to music while they worked. Since the students were familiar with the materials we introduced magazines and collaging to get them ready for the following lesson! Then at the end of the lesson we introduced the next topic: scrapbooking!

Some students were able to finish their postcards early so they were able to work on different projects! Some students chose to create timelines of their lives while others chose to draw themselves in the future. Once they felt satisfied with their finished products they were free to use any of the materials for free time!!
