"Passing Memory Through the Arts"

Teachers: Ms. Freya and Ms. Millay

Objectives of Lesson 1 and Lesson 2

The students of Ms. Freya's and Ms. Millay’s ArtWorks classes learned about the importance of memory not just as a means to recalling events from the pass but also the different ways memory is important in the present and for the future. Both art lessons taught the students how art can be used to preserve, recall, learn, and share memories. The students created two art products: postcards with images on the front and a written letter to someone they cared about on the back. They also created their own scrapbooks with a back and cover, sewed their own bindings and had inserted pages for future uses. Both projects were used to create fond memories of the student's choosing that could include but not limited to: family stories, travel, outings with friends, funny moments, first time riding a bike or swimming, etc. Mixed media using different materials including a variety of papers, drawing tools, cut images, and painting were used for both projects.
