Cardboard City

What does your dream home look like?

Students began class by creating drawings of their dream home. This activity prompted them to think about their own personal and basic needs, and how architecture and  different places in our community can fulfill these needs.

Shape vs. Form

Students learned about the difference between shape and form. Next, they learned how to combine simple forms in order to create more complex forms. This technique is foundational in art and can be applied to other 3-D and 2-D mediums. For example, breaking down a complex object into simple forms makes it easier to draw.

Students foraged for natural materials they would use in their cardboard buildings.

Scavenging for building materials connected students to their local environment, gave their materials personal value, and highlighted their responsibilities as members of their community.

Students constructed their buildings from cardboard boxes, recycled materials, and natural materials they selected themselves. They created houses, restaurants, elevators, birdhouses, pools, fishing rods, and more!
