The Instructional Innovation Division is growing from its start date, July 1, 2020 and has acted quickly to serve the needs of the NPC Community. The division houses support from the Libraries, Instructional Technology and Curriculum Support, Perkins Grants, Early College, and Office of Accessibility and Inclusion. We serve our students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
Innovation Connections is a monthly newsletter that features division updates and college-wide innovation and collaboration. Contact Shannon Motter if you wish to contribute to the content.
As we begin the new semester, Instructional Innovation Division is busy working on getting things ready for the fall. Click the link below to read about various projects our ITCS, Library Services, Early College, Office of Accessibility and Inclusion, and Perkins Grant are working on...
Where are you from, originally, and/or currently?
I am originally from the Rochester, New York area, a little village on the Erie canal called Fairport. I have also lived in Manhattan, Utah, and Idaho. I am currently settled in Snowflake with some of my family.
What is your educational background and what makes you great at your job?
I am a Nationally Certified Interpreter for the Deaf. I went to Brigham Young University and then The National Technical Institute for the Deaf ( NTID). The NTID Interpreting Training Program is led by several industry leaders.
What do you love about your job?
I enjoy working with people of all ages. I am an advocate (some would say a tiger) when it comes to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
What areas in this job are your strong points and how will this make you a great resource?
I am a mother with a child who required accommodations throughout their educational career. Now that my child has been in college, I not only have the academic knowledge but "street smarts" as well. The ADA is different for students in and transitioning to college. I know my experience can help make that transition smoother.
What are your favorite things to do/eat/read?
Do:
Hike/Walk in the woods with my dogs. Swim. Raise chickens.
Eat:
Peanut M&Ms, Seafood in all its varieties - especially sushi.
Read:
Histories, Bibliographies/Autobiographies, and mostly intense action-packed suspenseful "who done it " thrillers.
What's something you want to do once the pandemic is over?
Visit my children. Sit on a beach where the water hits the sand all day reading a thriller.
What goal are you dreaming about completing?
There are two really.
I am going to figure-out Arizona High Desert gardening! Being from the East you can throw seeds in the ground and by August you are having food fights with all the extras from the garden. I am currently in the process of building a geothermal greenhouse/hoop house I have designed.
I want to build a tiny house for when my older children come to visit. I have just finished the plans and am waiting for materials prices not to be so outrageous.
The Libraries will be open 8am-4pm Monday through Friday this fall (staff numbers permitting). And we are there for your reference questions virtually as well so ask away!
Need an instruction session for your students? We are always available virtually. And we are offering in-person Instruction sessions on a limited basis (capacity limits observed).
The Libraries are gearing up for a wide range of Library Events this fall. Come check out the ever popular Readers and Writers Book Club where you read whatever you want and come to discuss, or just listen. Join the Data Nerds Books Club, Adult Storytime (yes, you ask and we provide a venue), Pajama Storytime (for kids), Engaging Talks, 20 minute weekly Library (En)Lightening Talks, or the NPC Writers' League for those that fancy themselves writers.

"Open pedagogy, or open educational practices, is the open sharing of teaching practices and information with the goal of improving education. On one level, this can be done through the use of open educational resources (OER). On another level, it can be inviting your students to be part of the teaching process and the co-creation of knowledge."
This resource provides resources, links, and ideas for your own Open Pedagogy projects and courses.
