As NPC gears up for its 50th anniversary, it is imperative to shine a light on our dedication to fostering and integrating open educational resources (OERs).
On September 29th, a group of faculty, staff, and administrators attended the Arizona Open Textbook for Rural Colleges Summit in Prescott. This summit was a platform to connect, applaud, and kindle enthusiasm among members of the Arizona Open Textbook Consortium. The day was packed with group sessions, targeted professional development, subject-specific discussions, and an opportunity for partners to showcase their achievements. Our team proudly shared a video highlighting NPC’s adoption of OERs...
Where are you from originally and/or currently?
I'm from west of Phoenix (Litchfield Park) but lived all over the Valley and moved to the mountains 8 years ago. I currently live in Vernon with my Hubby and our 2 cattle dogs, Artimus and Apollo.
What is your educational background?
I did my undergrad at ASU in History with an East Asian Studies Certificate. My MA is from American Public University in Public History. Public History is specifically for sharing history in non-academic settings, like museums, to convey our shared history to a wider audience.
What do you love doing the most in your work?
I love being able to support our amazing Early College Team help the high school students across the district achieve their academic and career goals.
If you were to take a course in something, what would it be?
Navajo History and Yoga
What are your favorite things to do/eat/read?
I love going to theme parks and going on thrill rides. My favorite foods are cheese and chocolate. I read an eclectic collection of books from histories to political theory to science fiction/ fantasy series.
What goal are you dreaming about completing?
My longshot dream is to go to SanRio Land in Japan (Hello Kitty theme park), but I'll settle for organizing an NPC trip to Magic Mountain.
Last month I shared that the OAI webpage would be getting some updates as the semester continued, well those updates are going to start this month. The current OAI webpage is very busy making it difficult to find what you are looking for regardless for all who use it. I would like to work towards a more user-friendly webpage to ensure easier navigation and accessibility. My goal is to ensure that we are following Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility codes for webpages, and to provide some order to the information shared so that one does not have to agonize over the process. I look forward to any feedback as these changes are put in place.

Early College has been as busy as ever. We're finalizing last minute dual enrollments, attending college/ job fairs all over the district and preparing for spring registration. Kate, our Office Assistant, will be helping Dr. Ma and Instructional Council in AJ's absence until a new assistant can be hired and trained. But most of all we are so pleased to welcome Monty Begay to our team. Monty is our SCC based Early College Advisor. He wanted you all to know: "I received my bachelor's in social work from NAU and worked in the valley for about 6 years as a social worker and then later became an advocate for clients who were trying to get out of financial debt. I am very fond of music and that my favorite holiday is Halloween and that my family and cultural values are very important to me." We're looking forward to seeing you all at EagleFest.

Fast Refried Bean Soup Recipe photo by Taste of Home
With the cooler temperatures of autumn, I like to make a soups and chilis. This recipe for Fast Refried Bean Soup is a favorite. It's a great meatless option with the flavor and comforting heartiness of a chili. When I take it to a potluck, I often get asked for the recipe. This recipe also works great in a slow cooker and can easily be modified for the Instant Pot.
