Cuban Arepas - Amelia Medina Blanco, '22

Background

There are many types of arepas in Latin America and they are all very different. This is my grandma's recipe, and it is how arepas are made in Cuba.

Equipment

    • Mixing bowl

    • Non-stick pan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of flour

  • 1 tbsp of sugar

  • salt

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup of milk (or water)

  • 1 stick of butter

Instructions

1) To make the batter, start by mixing all dry ingredients together (flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt)

2) Add the egg and 2 tbsp of melted butter and mix well.

3) Add the cup of milk in 1/4 cup increments. The final batter should be slightly watery, but still have some thickness to it.

4) Melt some butter in the non-stick pan and add some of the batter, turning the pan around to make a very thin arepa

5) Cook until the sides start to dry up and then flip. Cook until desired color

6) Arepas are usually eaten by adding something sweet into the middle (usually sugar, but can also add syrup or honey), and rolling them into a cylindrical shape.

Note: You can also sprinkle some cinnamon and nutmeg along with the sugar when eating the arepas.
