STEM is everywhere—from coding to chemistry, and now...lemons? 🍋 This week, our pupils got hands-on with STEM by creating their very own lemon batteries, turning ordinary fruit into mini powerhouses! Curious how it works? STEM teaches us how science, technology, engineering, and math combine to solve real-world problems, like turning a lemon into electricity. It’s all about using what’s around you to think creatively and power up the future.
So, whether you're lighting a bulb with fruit or dreaming up the next big invention, STEM gives you the tools to shine!
"Powering the Future with Lemons: STEM in Action!"🎈
This week in science, our pupils took their STEM skills to the next level by experimenting with fruit cells—specifically, creating their very own lemon batteries! 🍋🔋 Curious how a simple lemon can power a light bulb? Let’s dive in!
The Science Behind It
Here’s how it works: when you stick copper and zinc metals into a lemon, they act like the positive and negative terminals of a battery. The zinc reacts with the lemon juice (which contains citric acid), releasing zinc ions (Zn2+) and electrons (2 e-). The electrons stay on the metal, and when the wires of a light bulb are connected, they allow the electrons to flow—creating electricity!
This flow of electrons, or current, powers up the small light bulb. Eventually, the electrons reach the copper. Luckily, because the copper is also touching the lemon, the process keeps going and the light stays on!
And guess what? You can try this with other fruits and veggies too! So next time you see a lemon, remember—it’s not just for lemonade, it can light up your world! ⚡
STEM never tasted so sweet!
These fun experiments are more than just classroom activities—they’re shaping the scientists and innovators of tomorrow, giving students the skills to explore, invent, and lead the way to exciting new discoveries!

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This week's free online safety guide focuses on looking at ways that trusted adults can encourage open conversations with children and young people about their digital lives. It outlines useful tips such as being as honest as possible, discussing how misleading the online world can be and creating a ‘family agreement’.
Most parents frequently chat with their child about how things are going at school or what’s happening in their friendship groups – but those discussions often doesn’t extend to youngsters’ online activities. In fact, National Online Safety conducted a recent survey which found that only slightly more than half (54%) of parents regularly talk to their children about staying safe online.
It can be an awkward topic. However, just checking in with your child about their digital life can get them thinking about online safety and alert you to any issues they might be having.
In the guide you'll find a number of useful tips such as being as honest as possible, discussing how misleading the online world can be.

🎉🏆 Leading the Way: Year 9’s Epic Half-Term Adventure! ⚽🧗♂️
This half-term, our amazing Year 9 students have been sharpening their leadership skills in the most thrilling ways through football and climbing! Let’s dive into the action! 🌟
In football, the stars of 9.1 have stepped up as captains, taking charge of warm-ups and setting an energetic vibe for each session. With the responsibility to plan tactics, adapt formations, and make split-second decisions during matches, these young leaders have learned the art of managing team dynamics, communicating like pros, and keeping their teammates motivated on the pitch! 🙌⚽
On the climbing wall, leadership took on a new twist! Students partnered up to tackle challenging routes, where they had to analyze paths, give each other constructive feedback, and ensure everyone’s safety while climbing high. This not only honed their tactical decision-making skills but also built confidence and a sense of responsibility. 🧗♀️💪
