This week we had great fun celebrating World Book Day together. It’s always a wonderful opportunity to share our love of stories with the children and to remind everyone just how magical books can be.
One of the highlights of our celebrations this year was our staff costume competition. Our team really embraced the spirit of the day and arrived dressed as a fantastic range of book characters. From classic storybook favourites to modern heroes, the creativity on display was amazing and it certainly brought plenty of smiles and laughter throughout the day.
There was some fantastic student costumes too and we loved hearing about everyone's favourite characters.
Well done to Mrs Thompson who won our student votes for the best costume! 🏆
One of the highlights was literacy time quizzes, where guessed the staff member and their favourite book. Year 7 also enjoyed the National Literacy Trust's 'Footy & Booky' Quiz where they competed against other schools with exciting questions about famous books.
We also had a special treat where our staff read a book aloud for everyone to enjoy: Half a Man - Michael Morpurgo
Finally, our students also took part in a Big Book Swap in the library, exchanging their favourite books with classmates and discovering new stories to enjoy. The library was buzzing with excitement as children shared recommendations, talked about characters they loved, and found fresh reads to take home. It was a wonderful way to celebrate World Book Day, encouraging a love of reading and the joy of sharing stories with friends.
This week in STEM Club, students took on a slightly unusual challenge: making pink pickled onions! 🧅
The room quickly filled with curiosity as jars, onions, and ingredients appeared on the tables. Students carefully added the onions to their jars and measured out the pickling mixture, making sure everything was just right before sealing them up.
There was a real buzz in the room as everyone compared their jars and discussed what might happen next. Although the onions didn’t turn pink straight away, that’s all part of the excitement — the transformation happens over time! ⏳
By the end of the session, everyone left with their own jar of onions, ready to watch the magic happen over the next few days. 🥳
A fun, hands-on session and another great reminder that STEM can be creative, practical, and sometimes even a little bit tasty! 😋 A special thank you to Mr Clark for leading this session! 🧑🍳🧑🔬🧅

Extra-Curricular Updates
From Mr Insley, Assistant Principal
Over the past few months it has been fantastic to see the continued growth of our extra-curricular provision across the school, with excellent attendance from students across all year groups. Increasingly, students are choosing to stay after school, try something new and represent themselves through the wide range of activities now available.
Extra-curricular activities are a vital part of school life. They help students build confidence, develop friendships across year groups and discover new interests, while demonstrating our core values of Leadership, Belief and Self-Discipline beyond the classroom.
Several newer clubs have already seen great success. Darts club has quickly become a favourite for KS4 students, offering a relaxed but competitive environment where skill and focus are developing. Pokémon club has proved popular with students who enjoy strategy, trading and friendly competition, while our e-sports provision continues to grow, allowing students to compete and collaborate in a structured setting. Touch rugby has also started strongly, with excellent enthusiasm from those involved.
This is only the beginning. A number of new clubs are currently being planned and we look forward to sharing more details with students and families soon.
Parents can support this by talking with their son about the clubs they attend or any new clubs they would like to see. Student voice plays an important role in shaping our programme, and many of our most successful clubs have come directly from student suggestions.
We are proud of the culture developing around extra-curricular life at the school and look forward to seeing even more students getting involved as the year progresses.
⚽Porta Football Tour⚽
The deadline for the Porto deposit is today. The amount is £200 and this will secure your child's place on the trip. We need a minimum of 35 students to have registered in order to run the trip, we will review the payments next week and share the outcome based on this. This week has been full of energy, creativity and opportunity across the school. Our World Book Day celebrations were a real highlight, with fantastic costumes from both staff and students, literacy quizzes, a whole-school reading of Half a Man by Michael Morpurgo, and a brilliant Big Book Swap in the library that had students excitedly sharing and discovering new stories.
Alongside this, it has been wonderful to see students embracing the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities available, from STEM Club’s hands-on experiments to the growing number of clubs after school. School is about more than lessons, it is about trying new things, building confidence and discovering new passions.
As the saying goes, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… the man who never reads lives only one.” This captures exactly what we encourage our students to do every day: explore, experience and make the most of every opportunity school offers.
I encourage every student to get involved, try something new and take full advantage of the experiences available, because the more you put into school life, the more you will gain from it. 📚
