🚀 Engineering the Future: Year 8 Students Rise to the Challenge in a High-Energy STEM Experience 🔧

We were thrilled to welcome the Smallpeice Trust, alongside their industry partners Truflo Marine, for an action-packed and inspiring STEM day with our Year 8 students.

From the very start, the energy in the room was remarkable. The day launched with a fast-paced engineering challenge: could teams construct the tallest free-standing tower using just 10 sheets of paper, no glue allowed, and strong enough to hold a 100g weight? What followed was a brilliant display of ingenuity, resilience, and competitive spirit, as students tested ideas, adapted designs, and pushed the limits of what seemed possible. The excitement only grew as students moved into the main event: the Wind Turbine Project. Working collaboratively, teams were tasked with designing and building their own functional turbines using materials purchased within a set budget. This introduced a powerful real-world dimension, students had to think not only like engineers, but also like project managers, making strategic decisions about resources and design.

Armed with tools and determination, students brought their ideas to life, before presenting their final designs and explaining how their turbines could contribute to renewable energy solutions. The ultimate moment of truth came when each turbine was tested, would it turn in the wind?

The day was a true celebration of creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, giving students a hands-on insight into the world of engineering and sustainability. Experiences like this don’t just build knowledge, they ignite curiosity, confidence, and ambition.

📸 Year 11 Shine in Final 10-Hour Photography Exam: 

Talent, Resilience and Determination on Display

Our Year 11 Photography students have demonstrated outstanding commitment, resilience, and creativity in their final 10-hour exam.

Throughout the extended session over 2 days, students showed exceptional focus and professionalism, working with real determination to refine and complete their final photography outcomes. The level of patience and attention to detail was impressive, with students carefully developing ideas, experimenting with composition, and making thoughtful artistic decisions under exam conditions.

What stood out most was their work ethic and resilience, maintaining momentum over a long, demanding period while continuing to push their creative boundaries. Alongside this, there was clear evidence of real talent, with a range of powerful and well-executed final pieces produced. The outcomes will reflect not only technical skill but also creativity and personal expression, showcasing just how much students have developed over the course.

A huge well done to all Year 11 Photography students for their determination and excellent attitude throughout the exam, you should be extremely proud of your work. A massive thank you to Mr Fowles, who has guided and supported them throughout the course and during the examination period.

Year 11 Final Examinations & Revision Resources

The summer examination period runs from Wednesday 29th April to Wednesday 24th June. The full timetable has been released below. Punctuality and full preparation are essential for every exam. This is a key moment to step up your preparation, attend intervention, complete revision and leave no stone unturned. There are many rewards along the way, but the most important outcome is your final exam performance. We wish you every success in the weeks ahead. Each week we will publish the overview of all examsinations, revision and intervention available for the week ahead. These sessions are very important and we encourage students to attend. Please speak to your son about taking full advantage of all the sessions available to them. Attendance and punctuality for ALL examinations is essential.

🎭 Creativity in Action: Lordswood Arts Award Students 

Shine in Inspiring Showcase

Our Arts Award students have demonstrated outstanding creativity, commitment, and personal growth over the past few months, working with great dedication alongside staff to complete their Arts Award journeys.

The Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification that supports young people in developing their creativity, communication, and leadership skills through the arts. At Lordswood, students have worked towards Bronze and Silver levels, engaging in a rich programme of artistic exploration and personal development.

Over the course of the programme, students have taken part in a wide range of creative experiences across music, dance, drama, and costume design. They have planned and completed individual arts challenges, collaborated with peers, researched artists and creative industries, and reflected thoughtfully on their progress. At Silver level, students have also embraced leadership opportunities, supporting and guiding others in creative activities.

A particular highlight was the showcase held on 24th April, where students from Year 7 through to Year 11 proudly presented their work. The event was a true celebration of talent and effort, highlighting not only their artistic achievements but also their resilience, independence, and teamwork.

The quality and variety of work on display reflected the depth of engagement and passion students have brought to the programme. It was a moment to celebrate how far they have come and the confidence they have gained along the way.

We are incredibly proud of all our Arts Award students for their hard work and determination, and we look forward to seeing them complete their qualifications by the end of the school year.
