Year 9 University of Birmingham Forward Thinking Programme

Year 9 students attended the UoB trip on Tuesday 21st April 2026. Alongside several other schools from across the city, students were given the opportunity to experience aspects of university life, taking part in a range of enrichment activities and events designed to broaden their aspirations and understanding of higher education.

The day began in a lecture theatre with an engaging and inspiring two-person performance, which humorously explored the advantages and challenges of university life.

This was followed by a paper aeroplane competition, in which all 20 schools competed to design and fly the furthest-travelling aircraft. Wasi represented the school with a carefully designed aeroplane, achieving an impressive throw across the lecture theatre. His plane travelled both a significant distance and, uniquely among many entries, flew in a straight line. Wasi placed second overall, narrowly missing first place, and each member of the group was awarded a silver medal, which they proudly wore for the remainder of the day.

The group then moved across campus to the University’s Sport and Fitness building, where students tried squash for the first time and made use of the exercise bikes. They also learned about the wide range of extracurricular opportunities available at the university from student ambassador Heather, including archery, swimming, and even a cappella.

This was followed by a social session, where Year 9 students took part in ice-breaker activities and games with students from other schools, helping to build confidence and communication skills. The day concluded with a circus skills workshop, during which students learned how to use a diabolo and were introduced to the basics of juggling.

Overall, the visit provided a highly engaging and aspirational experience, giving students valuable insight into university life and the breadth of opportunities available in higher education.

Year 11 Final Summer Examinations & Revision Resources

The summer examination period runs from Wednesday 29th April to Wednesday 24th June. The full timetable has been released below. Punctuality and full preparation are essential for every exam. This is a key moment to step up your preparation, attend intervention, complete revision and leave no stone unturned. There are many rewards along the way, but the most important outcome is your final exam performance. We wish you every success in the weeks ahead. Each week we will publish the overview of all examsinations, revision and intervention available for the week ahead. These sessions are very important and we encourage students to attend. Please speak to your son about taking full advantage of all the sessions available to them. Attendance and punctuality for ALL examinations is essential.

Inclusion Updates

Supporting your Child's Mental Health and Wellbeing 

We know that children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing are central to their success and happiness in school. We are committed to ensuring that all students feel supported, safe, and able to thrive.

We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Compass Mental Health Support Team (MHST) to enhance the support available to our students. The MHST is a team of qualified mental health practitioners who provide early intervention support for children and young people experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, stress, or low mood. Support may include group work, school-based workshops, and short-term 1:1 interventions, usually delivered over 6–8 sessions. The team also works closely with school staff and families to ensure the right support is in place at the right time, and can help signpost to additional services where needed.

We are committed to working together with families to ensure every child receives the support they need to feel confident, resilient, and ready to learn.

On Friday 22nd May, we look forward to welcoming Paul Clark from the Clod Ensemble (London) back to school. He will be running GCSE Music workshops with Year 10 students, helping them to develop their skills and confidence as they prepare to begin their official coursework compositions.

We would also like to say a huge thank you and well done to our Year 11 students, who have been working extremely hard to complete their music coursework. Your dedication and commitment have been fantastic to see.

A special congratulations goes to our Pop Symphony Orchestra, who recently performed at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. You represented the school brilliantly, and we are incredibly proud to share that you have now been invited to perform at Symphony Hall on 22nd June, a remarkable achievement!

Finally, it is always a pleasure to celebrate the talent and enthusiasm of our students who contribute to music beyond the classroom. As part of this, we continue to recognise their efforts through our much-loved weekly “Chocolate Friday” rewards. We encourage all students involved in music enrichment to keep taking part, have you got what it takes to join us this Friday? 🎤🍫
