We were delighted to welcome MP Preet Gill into school this week, where she spoke to our students about the power of compassion and the importance of giving, especially during the Christmas season. Her message encouraged our young people to recognise the impact of kindness and to continue supporting those who need it most. This message resonated deeply with our ongoing Christmas Hamper Appeal.
Your generosity in supporting hampers for the most vulnerable families in our school and across our 12 partner schools in Birmingham has been truly extraordinary. We are deeply grateful to every family who has contributed, your kindness will bring comfort and hope to those who need it most this Christmas.
A special and heartfelt thank you goes to our external donors, The Pama Family, The Dhaliwal Family and The Kang Family, whose outstanding generosity has helped strengthen this year’s appeal.
It was also wonderful to see so many volunteers come together to pack the hampers, including our youngest helper at just four years old, a beautiful reminder that the spirit of giving starts early.
Together, we are showing what a caring, united community can achieve.
Extra-Curricular Update
From Mr Insley, Assistant Principal
Growing Participation & New Opportunities Ahead
This half term has highlighted the strength of our extra-curricular programme, with students embracing new challenges beyond the classroom. Year 9 has been a standout success, significantly increasing their club attendance after a highly effective student voice exercise that helped shape new opportunities.
Next up, it's Year 10. There is huge potential in the year group, and the next phase of our strategy focuses on boosting your participation. After half term, we will gather your student voice to identify the clubs and activities you want to see, ensuring everyone is heard and supported to get involved.
After Christmas, Peak Performance will also refresh its offer in response to student feedback calling for more variety, choice, and challenge. As always, students will have the chance to change their activity and try something new, Year 7 and Year 8 look out for updates from Ms Russell.
A special mention goes to Gaming Club, which continues to grow with its friendly, competitive atmosphere and exciting tournaments. It’s become one of our most popular clubs, but there are still spaces available so come along and join! Let’s keep the momentum going. A new year brings new choices and new chances, who’s stepping up next?
College Updates
This year’s College Basketball Tournament was a brilliant display of skill, teamwork, and competitiveness. Students across all year groups showed strong technical ability, from confident dribbling to accurate free throws, with particularly impressive defensive discipline and communication.
Most striking was the high level of sportsmanship. Players consistently demonstrated respect by supporting opponents, accepting decisions maturely, and celebrating each other’s successes, setting a strong example for younger students.
A special thank-you goes to our Year 11 referees and helpers, whose fair and calm leadership ensured the tournament ran smoothly.
After a thrilling final, Westerly were crowned champions, narrowly defeating Central by five points. Mercia finished third, missing out on the title for the first time, and Midland placed fourth, despite winning the Year 11 4v4.
Congratulations to all teams for an exciting tournament filled with skill, respect, and memorable moments.

Safeguarding Updates
With darker evenings, many parents feel increased concern for their children’s safety. These practical tips can help:
Use the Buddy System: Encourage students not to walk alone, especially after school or in the evenings.
Wear Reflective or Bright Clothing: Improves visibility for those walking or cycling after dark.
Stay in Well-Lit Areas: Avoid shortcuts; choose routes with street lighting and people around.
Set Check-In Times and Curfews: Regular updates and agreed return times help ensure safety.
Identify Trusted Adults: Make sure students know who they can go to for help in different settings.
Prioritise Online Safety: Remind students not to share personal information or interact with strangers on social media or gaming platforms.
Trust Their Instincts: If something feels wrong, they should leave the situation immediately.
Recognise Online Stranger Danger: Reinforce that not everyone online is who they claim to be; report anything concerning to a trusted adult.
By reinforcing these habits, we help students stay aware, make safer choices, and navigate both the real and digital world with confidence.
