Welcome to my weekly blog - I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.
It's true. Wellbeing matters. Whilst we all acknowledge that students come to school every day to receive a good education, we should remember that their wellbeing is an important factor in ensuring that they are able to achieve their full potential. It is a topic that is very much in the news at the moment and Lordswood Boys’ School is committed to promoting and protecting emotional wellbeing and mental health in our whole school community.
We strive to create an environment which has a whole school approach in providing excellent support, understanding and intervention for all individuals in order to maintain their positive wellbeing and mental health. We put wellbeing at the heart of our school to ensure successful learning; developing the curriculum and teaching, learning and assessment methods to optimise mental health and wellbeing, recognising neurodiversity, while maintaining academic standards.
We believe having a mentally healthy community is not about being happy all of the time, but about working together through the challenges and sharing the celebrations; feeling supported, heard, accepted, valued and empowered.
It is essential that we work together in partnership to understand what wellbeing means to students, parents and the wider school community, and we would like to invite you to share your thoughts with us by completing a short questionnaire. Please click here to begin.
We would also like to invite you to join us at our first ever Wellbeing Coffee Morning which will be held in school on Tuesday 21st May from 9-10am. We would love to see as many of you as possible and take the opportunity to discuss Wellbeing with you further. Everyone is welcome! Please arrive via the Hagley Road entrance and we will meet you in Main Reception.

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to 'SCHOOL AVOIDANCE'.
School avoidance is a sharply increasing phenomenon, with tangible negative effects on children’s wellbeing and education. The factors that come together to make a child consciously avoid seeing their classmates and teachers can be much more complicated than is often assumed. A careful, mindful approach from parents, carers and educators is required to help children return to an environment that may be causing them intense anxiety.
This guide aims to help you understand the issue of school avoidance – not only its potential roots and ramifications, but also what we can do to help children and young people navigate these obstacles and continue their education.
I hope your find this information useful.

Performing Arts
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, students have been discussing how Dance has had a positive impact on their mental health and the purpose of the creative arts in their curriculum. Dance has been increasingly recognised for its positive impact on mental health. Engaging in dance can offer numerous psychological benefits, which contribute to overall well-being. Students have discussed how their confidence has improved when working in a group, how listening and moving to music alleviates their stress, and that they feel creatively challenge.
On Thursday 16th May, all Year 7 students visited The Belgrade Theatre to watch ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. The story is an adaptation of the book written by Onjali Rauf; it explores the importance of friendship, kindness and hope. The students absolutely loved going to the theatre and shared some brilliant reviews.
“The performance taught us about real life situations but was also entertaining. I had real sympathy for the characters in the show.”
“It was absolutely amazing, comedy gold!”
“The show was humorous and educational as it explores the wars happening in different countries.”
Here is a reminder regarding our Extra-Curricular provision. Please find the timetable below of the clubs that we offer. This timetable has been amended slightly for the remainder of this half-term.
Physical Education Provision
Students have began their Athletics Unit in PE lessons in preparation for Sports Day. This week the students have focused on the element of pacing in long distance running, developing their knowledge around the cardiovascular system and how the body responds to the stress of endurance events.
Football Provision
Year 7 will face Harborne Academy on Thursday the 6th of June in a re-arranged league fixture. Training will be on Tuesday next week for all of Year 7 opposed to the original evening of a Thursday.
Year 8 and 10 will have friendly fixtures after half-term as the season comes to an end. These games will be used to assess the squads for the 2024-2025 season as we look to continue on our progressive journey.
Talented Athlete Programme
Our Talented Athlete sessions this week focused on good habits and how consistency in your actions can bring success. Students looked at various case studies of elite athletes, unpicking the good habits that they maintain combined with an elite mind-set. Students were then tasked with reflecting on their current good habits, as well as identifying the habits they need to improve.
