Nobody is sure when people first came to Nevada but historians have found ancient rock carvings there.Thousands of years ago Native American tribes, including the Washoe and Shoshone.The Nevada area gained independence from Spain, but like California, it became part of Mexico. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States took over the Nevada area.In 1859, precious metals like gold and silver were found in the area and in 1864, Nevada became a state.
