Iowa, known as the hawkeye state was first settled by people over 12,000 years ago. Many years later many Native American tribes made Iowa their home. Among these are the Dakota Sioux, Illini, Ioway and Missouria. In 1803 the United States purchased the land as part of the Lousiana Purchase. Iowa became the 29th state to join the USA in 1846. One interesting fact about Iowa is that it is a tradition that they begin every presidential election by holding the first caucuses.
The great state of Nebraska became a part of the USA in 1867 as the 37th state. Archeologists know that people lived in Nebraska over 13,500 years ago. Years later many Native American groups settled in the what was to become Nebraska. Among these groups are the Cheyanne, Lakota, Omaha, and Pawnee. Many Spanish and French explorers wanted to claim the land for their countries but in the 1803 France sold the land to the USA as part of the Lousiana Purchase. Did you know that the the state name comes from Native American words that mean flat water? The river that they are referring to is the Platte River that runs through Nebraska.

The land that became Minnesota was put together through buying land and treaties with Native Americans. Once it was all put together it became what we now know is Minnesota. Did you know the name Minnesota comes from the Dakota Sioux word mnisota. It means cloudy, muddy water or sky-tinted water.

It’s part of Ohio. People try to keep it from getting polluted. Ohio was a free state in the Civil War.
