The MFL department is dedicated to inspiring enthusiasm and excellence in all of our students. Our dynamic and passionate teaching will lead students to develop autonomy with the languages and to push themselves to the best of their ability. Students will feel successful and confident and ultimately fall in love with the study of languages.
Students begin their language-learning journey in Year 7, where they concentrate on French for their first year. French is chosen as the introductory language for our students, as we have close links to France through Guernsey’s proximity, and since French plays a huge part in the island’s rich history and culture.
From Year 8, pupils have the opportunity to learn Spanish in addition to French, allowing them to experience another language and culture. We also provide opportunities for students to travel abroad and take part in local cultural events, such as the Modern Languages Eisteddfod.
Our five-year curriculum continuously builds on students’ prior knowledge of the language through clear sequencing, gradually developing students’ confidence and competence in all four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
It is our aim to:
Develop pupils who are able to communicate with people from around the world
Develop pupils who have an understanding of different cultures and an open mind
Make languages accessible and engaging so that more pupils opt to study languages and feel confident to do so
Develop pupils’ confidence in a range of transferable skills such as communicating, listening, interpreting and understanding in order to provide them with skills necessary for the workplace.
