This module, our Personal Development curriculum has focussed on Health and Wellbeing. Personal Development is embedded within all areas of our curriculum at LAB, however students also have dedicated sessions in tutor time on SMSC development (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) and RSE teaching (Relationships and Sex education)
Delivery by tutors provides an open and safe climate for discussion, debate and learning. We have developed a set of LAB ground rules, such as not disclosing personal information about ourselves or others, commenting on what is said, not who has said it, and seeking help in school or encouraging friends to seek help if needed. We expect our students to seek to embody our LAB values (of respect, integrity, ambition, scholarship and resilience) in these sessions, in part because we know that good character leads to a virtuous and happy life.
Year 7 have looked at this theme through the lens of healthy lifestyle choices, including diet, dental health, physical activity and sleep. They have looked at influences such as caffeine, and many students discovered that fizzy drinks are also caffeinated drinks! They also looked at physical and emotional boundaries within relationships.
Year 8 have learnt about attitudes towards mental health, how to challenge myths and stigma and coping strategies.
Year 9 have learnt about the relationship between physical and mental health and about balancing work, leisure, exercise and sleep. They learnt about making informed healthy eating choices, managing influences on body image and how to take increased responsibility for physical health.
Year 10 learnt about positive and negative role models and how to evaluate the influence of role models and become a positive role model for peers. They learnt about other influences such as drugs and alcohol on decision making, and how to keep yourself safe with exit strategies for pressurised situations.
We encourage all LAB students to stay up to date with current affairs by using the news platform called The Day. Students have access to articles, quizzes, videos and news in a variety of languages.
Our assemblies this module have also focussed on Health and Wellbeing.
We have delivered assemblies on mindset, exploring your interests, what success looks like and how to dream up your future life.
Every assembly has finished with commitments students can make for the week, for example :
Starting the day with a positive thought about yourself
Making a conscious effort to be around people who are supportive & uplifting
Ending the day by reflecting on something challenging you overcame, with the use of positive self talk or by reaching out to a mentor.
Make a Life List
Think about what your dream life would be like and what success looks like to you.
Exploring your interests - try a new extra-curricular club
Trusting your ideas are unique and significant
Helping others
Thinking about your “World” dreams
Creating an Interest Map to think about the bigger picture
Researching Careers of the Future
Good sleep, exercise and asking for help
Parents and Carers' Forum
Our Parents and Carers' Forums this term have been an opportunity to enhance links between home and school, giving parents and carers a better understanding of their child’s education. We seek the views of all our parents and carers in order to develop stronger partnerships.
This term, we have held two Parents Forums where we have discussed the IB Middle Years Programme and Data, Assessment & Reports at LAB.
Miss Garcia led an excellent Parents’ Forum on the IBMYP - the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Given Covid restrictions, the Forum took place online and was well attended by a range of parents and carers across all year groups. Miss Garcia shared information about the key aspects of the programme and the rationale for delivering it at LAB, as it directly relates to our ethos and vision for our students.
We were also joined by Ms Fairs, STEAM Lead, Ms Clarke, Head of Visual Arts, and Mr Smith, Director of Learning for Science. They explained how the MYP is implemented in their curriculum area and the benefits it brings to students' learning and development.
Parents and carers commented positively on the impact the IBMYP framework has had on their own child’s personal and academic development. They mentioned that they had noticed the difference between their own experience at school and how the LAB curriculum is shaping their child in a holistic manner, in regards to their world knowledge, their approaches to learning and their general preparedness for life.
Mr Ritchie led the second forum this term on Data and Assessment, in particular the format of assessments within the MYP. Assessment plays a crucial role in supporting, as well as measuring, learning. The MYP approach to assessment also recognises the crucial role of providing students with effective feedback.

Student Government
It has been a busy term for our Student Government representatives. They have been an invaluable source of support in our recent evening events, in particular at our Year 7 and 8 Parents' Evening and Year 9 Options Evening.
We have developed three focus groups within our Student Government: sustainability, community and international mindedness.
All three of these focus groups have been developing an action plan to start putting their ideas and initiatives into action.
An initiative developed by the Community focus group has been very successful in this module. We are selling second hand uniform in order to raise funds for the Red Cross in support of the Ukrainian refugee crisis. The stand is running during evening events and we have already raised over £200. Thank you to those who have also donated uniform that is no longer in use.
Some of our representatives met with the MP Clive Efford to discuss his role in the local area. Our students asked him a number of thought-provoking questions about his roles and responsibilities. We also discussed the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis and how we are supporting it at LAB with a second hand clothes stand, non-uniform day and selling cupcakes in our restaurant. Some of our Year 9 students shared their Community Projects and Clive gave them some links in the local area such as the Greenwich Homeless shelter.
