It is hard to believe that we are over half way through the academic year. During modules 3 and 4, our Airy college community continued to thrive as we came to the end of yet another busy and exceptional term. Airy college attendance ends Module 4 with a year to date attendance figure of 92%, which continues to be above national average.
You may have seen within the personal development section of the newsletter that these past two modules have been full of exciting activities and opportunities with the development of our student voice. The Airy Student Government and newly appointed Student Leadership Team have been working hard with the entire LAB community. We are proud to announce our Airy Student Principals: Aalyiah and Arnav, and our five Airy student prefects: Jessica, Lila, Chizara, Reda and Deborah.
This module, the Airy Student Government has been working hard to develop a student friendly version of the LAB behaviour policy. This has been really supportive for some of our students to be able to better understand some of our systems and, of course, ensure that our LAB values are at the forefront of everything we do. For more details about our student government and leadership team please see the Personal Development section of the newsletter.
World Book Day:
You would have seen from other pages of the newsletter that WBD at LAB is a memorable event. The Airy college staff and students did not disappoint with their efforts in dressing up as their favourite book characters and joining in on all of the activities throughout the event.
Can you name the book characters?

Airy Stars and Student of the Fortnight
Each module in Airy, we celebrate and recognize students in the college that have gone above and beyond each week. Students who have consistently demonstrated the LAB values of Ambition, Integrity, Resilience, Scholarship and Respect are celebrated and recognised by our college community. Each week the tutors have been nominating a member of their tutor group and identifying the reason for their nomination. The wider Airy college team then votes for the winning student each week.
Each student has received additional LAB Ambassador merits. All students nominated receive appreciations in virtual assemblies with the reasons they have been nominated also shared.
Below is the list of students in modules 3 and 4 that have been selected for student of the fortnight:
Amir 8F
Anikait 9F
Lolah 8C
Elenor 8C
Freddie 7C
Tilly 10F
At the end of each module, we also have the opportunity to invite students to attend our Airy Celebration Breakfast. Students will be invited for consistently displaying the LAB values and for collecting the highest amount of merits. The event falls on the last week of the module.

Our Airy College Team
This module we welcomed an additional Student Services Manager to our team.
A message from Miss Jean to our Airy community and parents/ carers:
"Hello! I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Ms. Jean, the new Airy Student Services Manager. Since starting at Leigh Academy Blackheath I've learnt a lot. I've learnt about the importance of having a safe space, the significance of being kind and respectful, and the positive impact of having supportive people around you. This last one is incredibly special and I see this support among a multitude of students at LAB. Support from our peers affects us in ways we don’t always see, whether it’s someone sharing a bit of their lunch, or a student encouraging their friend to come to class. This supportive environment builds a sense of community and resilience. Knowing that we’re not alone and that we have kind people to rely on makes all the difference.
The students at LAB often show an incredible amount of care and thought in the ways in which they approach staff and each other. The Student Services Manager’s role is to look after the emotional wellbeing of the students. It is a great job that ranges in different tasks throughout the day. I hope that students at LAB know that the SSM office is a space to go for peace and emotional growth.
The amount of strength that I see in the students that come into our office day by day is astounding. Our office is full of exciting and calming things to facilitate that growth. We have exercise books for colouring in while we chat, playdough and fidget toys for sensory needs, and positive thought-based worksheets to go through with our students. It’s also important that parents know that they communicate with SSMs too. Our door is always open whether it’s something you’re not so sure on or just to check in regarding your child. LAB is a special environment that thrives on community and the Leigh Academy Blackheath values."
Finally we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our community both in school and at home for your continued support. We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the new year to start module 5. A reminder of the return date is Tuesday 19th April 2022 at the usual time. We would like to see all students with all equipment and in the correct LAB uniform. If you would like further details or clarification for what this is please see the Academy website.
Myself and all Airy College staff would like to wish you a very enjoyable and restful Easter break.
