Our goal throughout Modules 3 and 4 has been to improve understanding of what an International Baccalaureate education is and how we implement the Middle Years Programme at Leigh Academy Blackheath. During these two modules we have invited parents to a forum to understand the most important aspects of the IBMYP such as: conceptual understanding and the development of character. We have also led a parent forum on data and assessment where parents were able to discuss examples of summative assessments our students take in different curriculum areas.
During school events in Module 4 some of our students in Y9 and Y10 volunteered to deliver practical information to parents on what their education looks like and how studying in an IB World School has a positive impact on their education and personal growth. Please click here if you would like to read more information about the programme and look at examples of how it is implemented in different curriculum areas.
In addition to our community outreach this term, our Y9 students have been really busy working through their Community Project, which is a requirement for all students in Y9. Students take part in a cycle project reflecting on their interests, a need in the community they could improve and taking action towards meeting this need. We are very proud of all the fantastic work and ideas our students have. Some of the examples of projects are Primary school workshops, posters to raise awareness and organising litter picks. We truly believe that understanding their place in their local community and taking ownership over its improvement will encourage them to be better citizens in the future.

IB Learner Profile
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared ownership of their local, national and global community, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The 10 attributes are Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, OpenMinded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.
Approaches to Learning
We recognised that our students will be better equipped for the world of work if they have developed the soft skills employers recognised as most valuable in the place of work. The soft skills we directly and indirectly teach our students through the curriculum areas and LAB learner lessons are called Approaches to Learning (ATLs). There are 5 ATLs: Communication, Social, Thinking, Self-management and Research skills.
