It has been a hugely exciting module for the D&T department at LAB. Please see below for some of our highlights!
Textiles Club
For Modules 3-4, we have been running a Textiles club where students have had the opportunity to use the sewing machines and materials in textiles. Students have made eye masks, bags and many more items.
Food Technology
Students have made an array of delicious dishes in their food lessons! Students have used a variety of skills to help make both savoury and sweet dishes while learning about seasonal foods and food miles. This module, students made some dishes based on what is currently in season. Students also learn about the different macronutrient groups and were able to design healthy recipes which can be made at home.
Design & Technology
Students have been designing and manufacturing some very exciting products in this module in DT. From laser cut sunglasses to prototype trainers as well as designing and making chocolate moulds.
Between 11-20th March, students in D&T took part in British Science Week. The theme this year was “Growth”. In Food, students looked at the growth of mould, and how effectively mould can grow in different environments. We had some bread, which was either soaked in water, wiped on the floor and even on some keyboards, to see which surfaces saw the most growth of mould! Students learnt of the conditions required for mould to grow effectively.
In DT, students looked into structures and how we have managed to manufacture tall structures such as the building all around us in the city in which we live. Students were tasked with using engineering principles to help create a structure to be as tall as possible using limited resources. The record for all classes was an impressive 2.2 metres.
Computing
It has been an extremely busy module for the Computing department at LAB. Please see below for some of our highlights!
On Tuesday, 8 February 2022 we celebrated the 19th edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) with actions taking place right across the globe. With a theme once again of "Together for a better internet", the day called upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people.
At LAB our year 7 pupils were participating in promoting safe, responsible, and positive use of online technology. We had group work, independent work and used Google tools to enhance pupils’ skills in using technology safely too.
Pupils left the session with some very simple messages “I think we need to make the right choices when online,” and another pupil said, “You can’t really trust strangers, especially online.”
Our pupils have definitely left with a valuable lesson, which we hope they instil throughout their online journey in life.
Monday lunch times are our favourite, with the Girls into Coding & Digital Tech Club. Our girls are buzzing with their hands-on experience of building robots with Legos and programming it to compete against each other. Our student Aleksandra was amazed at how Bluetooth is used to connect to the Lego cars to program it to move a certain distance and in a specific direction. This has increased their curiosity about robotics and increased the number of girls showing an interest in the field.
We at LAB celebrate women's achievements and raise awareness against bias, taking action for equality. The number of female representatives in the Digital and Tech industry remains disproportionately low and we need to work together to bridge that gap. The number of girls taking Computer Science at GCSE has been statistically low around the globe and it needs a change. In some of our Computer Science lessons we joined the global initiative ‘International Women's Day’ to learn about the leading women who contributed to Computer Science and have made our lives easier with the development of such machines. Pupils carried out extensive research to find out about these women such as Ada Lovelace, a Mathematician who was the first programmer to identify machines that can be used beyond calculations of numbers. pupils put their research together and presented it Google Slides.
