Peripatetic Instrumental lessons
The LAB Performing Arts department is always working to celebrate and nurture new music talent at the Academy.
We are now offering a wide range of peripatetic instrument lessons in guitar, piano, voice, violin, clarinet, flute, trumpet and drum lessons.
All tuition is conducted on a one-to-one or groups basis with a rolling timetable. This means students will have tuition at a different time every week, therefore the impact on missing the same lesson twice is minimised. These lessons are paid for by parents or subsidised by the school via Pupil Premium funding.
There are a limited number of places available and therefore it is a first come first served basis, but there is a waiting list until a place becomes available.
Parents and Carers should have received a Google Form where you are able to register your interest. If you would like more information you can also read the terms and conditions that includes prices, timetable etc.
Here are some testimonies from our current students:
Gigi (Y7) Piano - “I really enjoy my lessons with Miss Huntley! In my lesson, we look at various different types of music, some from Grade 1, some from 2. I am also learning how to properly read notes as I am not that confident yet. So far, I have learned to play over 3 new songs and I have learned the new line names in the bass clef”
Chloe (Y8) Drums - “I really enjoy these individual lessons because my teacher, Mr Pagan, helps me have a clear understanding on how to play a piece and challenges me so I can do better in playing my pieces. In lessons he lets me play the piece and we work on my weaknesses, if all is fine we move onto the technicals because I am doing my grade 1 soon. I have learnt to play at a quicker speed and manage to spread out my practice at home when he gives me homework on what I need to improve. I really enjoy the lessons and am thrilled when it's a Monday because that means I get to go to my music lesson because of how great they are!”

Matilda the Musical Jr.
LAB Performing Arts is very excited to be producing the wonderful Matilda The Musical Jr, our first ever full scale production!
Rehearsals are in full swing and our students are really looking forward to showcasing this production in July. This is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their skills in singing, dancing and acting; and to collaborate with their peers in a professional performance experience. Tickets will be available to purchase via ParentPay at the start on Module 6. Details of this will be communicated to you closer to the time.
Here is a sneak peek of our Matilda rehearsals so far...
Elena, one of our incredible Matildas, has said: “The Matilda musical is going very well, with everyone contributing ang giving great ideas. Teachers have supported the students' opinions and have tested their thinking to improve the play and making it more successful”
Ashira, our amazing Bruce, has said: "The Matilda rehearsals are great! I always look forward to going to them during the week and they’re always fun! I get to work with different people who have the same interests as me. It’s a lot of work I must admit but seeing how everything, the routines and the acting, comes together so well makes it completely worth it!".
GCSE Theatre Trip - Life of Pi
On Thursday 24th March 2022, GCSE Drama students had the opportunity to experience a live performance of Life of Pi at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End. Life of Pi is a play based on a well-known book by Yann Martel, brought to life in a vibrant new adaptation on stage, performed live by talented actors.
It was apparent by comments made after the show that the students enjoyed the performance and appreciated the experience.
GCSE Drama Workshop with Martin Robinson
On Tuesday 18th January, GCSE Drama students took part in a workshop based on Devising Theatre with the critically acclaimed author, theatre practitioner and educator Martin Robinson. The students first talked about their current devising projects, and then were walked through a series of tools and techniques designed to support and stretch their performances; as well as think hard about devising stimuli, working on movement sequences, and then sharing work for feedback.
Ismay, GCSE Drama student said: "During the workshop, we were given a simple stimulus of walking around following our hands, allowing us to focus on only one thing and get into character. We built from this stimulus to working in pairs and following each other. Eventually we were able to add a story and characters. It was really interesting to see how such a minimal idea can become a complicated piece of drama."
