Clubs and societies are of great importance to us at Leigh Academy Blackheath and last module saw over half of our community attend at least one regularly, each week.
Teachers dedicate their time before, during, and after the school day to share their passions and interests with our pupils. With 31 different opportunities on offer this module, we sought to harness students' desire to master a skill, learn a language, represent the academy, or simply be physically active in a safe environment.
A pupil voice is held each module by our student government to see which other opportunities we can offer them going forwards. Typically, if we cannot deliver a club or society ‘in house’, we would look to take advantage of the areas of expertise within our local community.
The well-being of our pupils is of utmost importance. In such a turbulent time within our pupils’ lives, we endeavour to provide them with opportunities each and every day, to support their physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
Pupils truly value the time their teachers devote to providing co-curricular opportunities for them. It is clear that the clubs and societies programme has helped our pupils develop skills and interests outside of the classroom. Additionally, specific sports clubs and multi-activity mornings/evenings ensure our pupils place importance on regular participation in physical activity.
Our aim, moving forwards, is to engage an even greater number of our LAB community in our clubs and societies programme. Additionally, fixtures will play an important role, with pupils chosen to represent LAB who demonstrate the Values in, and around our Academy.
Debate Society
Out of all of the numerous clubs offered at LAB, debate society is a place where all ideas are welcomed and deliberated without the fear of failure. Since this club started in September, we have discussed a variety of topics: from climate change and ghosts, to our very existence.
We have examined political leaders, such as Winston Churchill, and have spent an afternoon debating over the best chocolate bar. We as a club believe that there is no ‘right’ answer to a question, but examine all possibilities. For example, one of our members - Sonia - has a defined theory that she is the world’s puppet master, and that we are just going along with her demands.
However, no one outwardly disagrees with this statement, because we all accept that there are infinite possibilities surrounding our place in this world (even if some members argue forcefully that we are, in fact, in a simulation!).
"Debate society has taught me to think critically about different points of view and the questions that surround them. It’s helped me understand how important a person’s voice is, and how all voices are necessary and needed. Being a member of this society helps me understand issues facing our world and pushes me to examine the past, present and future. The club also helps me channel my inner feminist, socialist, capitalist, Marxist, environmentalist and even the philosopher in me. In conclusion, debate society is a fun, exciting, social, collaborative and thought provoking club that will help build a person's identity, viewpoints and opinions. All helped by our numismatist, Mr Pinches. Yes, I did google that, and you might need to too. "
