Tea Area Legacy Elementary

School Counseling Website

Welcome to Legacy Elementary School Counseling Website!  I have the joy of working with students through classroom lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. I also collaborate with school staff and parents in order to best meet the needs of students. My mission for the counseling program is to assist all students in their quest to become productive citizens, responsible and lifelong learners through their academic development, personal and social growth and career exploration.

My name is Laura McCord and I am the School Counselor at Legacy. This will be my sixth year here! My husband Brett and I have four children: Claire, Evan, Owen and Cash. Any spare time is spent hanging out with family!

As the school counselor I will work to support students socially and emotionally, academically, and with future career exploration. To do this I am available to do school-wide classroom GOLD lessons, small group counseling and short-term individual counseling.

Classroom (GOLD) Lessons

Purpose: The purpose of GOLD class is to provide knowledge, attitudes, and skills through instruction is the areas of academic achievement, career development, and personal/social growth.

Each JK-5 classroom visits GOLD class a variety of times a month throughout the school year. Lessons typically last 30-45 minutes in length and cover topics such as school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, friendship skills, and other character education topics.

Small Group Counseling

Purpose: The purpose of small group counseling is to help students improve their classroom behavior, support academic progress, increase self-esteem, and to achieve skills in problem solving, decision-making, and social interactions.

A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations.  Groups can have anywhere from 3-6 members and usually meet once a week for about 6 weeks.

Individual Counseling

Purpose: The purpose of individual counseling is to provide support, explore feelings and behaviors, work through challenging situations, and identify growth opportunities to better understand themselves and others.

Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges
