Foster Youth Education Laws
Learn how foster youth education laws can impact a foster youth’s education and access to post-secondary options. Attendees will learn about AB 490 requirements and how to implement such requirements at their school site. Additionally, they will learn about AB 216 and get hands-on experience conducting transcript evaluations based on real-life scenarios. The presentation will be provided through a Trauma-Informed perspective.

School Administrators, School Counselors, Registrars, Attendance Clerks, CASA
Advocates and Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP) staff.

Hey Falcons! If you are currently in Foster Care or were in Foster Care previously after the age of 13 years old, you have a great RCC resource! Jessika Bohannon is a Riverside City College Foster Youth Support Network Specialist who will be visiting you at RHS to offer support and guidance through high school and beyond. California Chafee Grant for Foster Youth
If you are or were in foster care between the ages of 16 and 18 as a dependent or ward of the court and have financial need, you may qualify for up to $5,000 a year for career and technical training or college. You don’t have to pay this money back. You may also be able to use your grant to help pay for child care, transportation and rent while you’re in school. You can use your Chafee Grant at any eligible California college or university or career or technical school, as well as schools in other states.
To be considered for a California Chafee Grant, you must complete the following:
If you are a US citizen or legal permanent resident, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online; or
If you are not a US citizen, submit the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) online.

The Chafee Grant for Foster Youth is a federal and state funded grant that assists eligible students with college expenses, including child care, transportation and room & board. This money does not have to be repaid. The grant is up to $5000 per academic year, pending funding levels, cost of attendance and enrollment. This grant is administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).
Who Qualifies for the Chafee Grant?
To qualify for the Chafee Grant, you must be
A current or former foster youth who was a ward of the court, livining in foster care, for at least one day between the ages of 16 and 18.
If you are/were in Kin-GAP, a non-related legal guardianship, or were adopted, you are eligible only if you were a dependant or ward of the court, living in foster care, for at least one day between the ages of 16 and 18.
Have not reached your 26th birthday as of July 1st of the award year.
Have not participated in the program for more than 5 years (whether or not consecutive
You must be enrolled in a progam of study at least 1 year in length.
